Anyone here read "Hyperion"?

Nardpuncher

Rear Admiral
I'm only on page 200 or so of the first book, but it really reminds me of Lost.
It's the themes and some of the ideas that remind me so much of it. Mystery in a far away place, a mysterious force that seems to judge the people that come to the place, people who have a prior relationship with the place as well as a few other things.
I'm just saying that a couple of weeks ago I posted a thread about books that are like Lost and at that point I'd just bought the book, but I felt that other people that get hungry for stuff like our show would like to know about it.

I've read it but honestly, I didn't notice any huge similarities to Lost.

Those are popular and widely used fictional elements.

Oddly enough, I read the books and short stories just a couple of months ago, so they're fresh in my mind. It's a fantastic series of books.

What I mean is like the way that Doc Savage could sate somebody's appetite for Indiana Jones books kind of thing.
I get the same 'feeling' when I read this book (as I said only on page 200 so far) as I do when I watch Lost.

I love that book series. Enjoyed the Endymion saga more than the Hyperion saga, but part of the joy of that series is returning to the worlds established in Hyperion and seeing the changes that have occurred since the end of the first saga.

Actually, since I just finished the last book i was reading (Inception, by SD Perry), this thread has inspired me to grab my copy of Hyperion and re-read it again :)

I haven't even finished the first book but i already bought the other 3 and will be keeping the first book around as I can easily see myself reading it again in a few years.
Another thing I like is the cover art has been the same for the books since they were first printed.
But Scout101 do you see any similarities to Lost?

Not really. Really more of a sci-fi Canterbury Tales, with some EXCELLENT world building. Closest Lost similarity would be the "flashbacks" as each of the pilgrims tells their tale of why they are on the journey to Hyperion and the time tombs. Guess that part's pretty similar...

In addition to the flashbacks you also have characters driven by their particular, well, damage, which is kind of Lost-ish too.

true enough. just amazing world-building and backstories for the characters, makes a great read!

What bugged me about Hyperion was that I always find the beginning of a story to be the least interesting....and it kept seeming like every time things were getting moving, a sub-story ended and I was back at another beginning. Ironically, this applied even to the framing story. This tended to break the flow of the read for me.

I have Fall of Hyperion on my shelf, but I haven't read it yet.

I guess you'd have to finish the 2nd half of the book (Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion are really just one big book told over two parts). If you stopped watching a tv show at the "to be continued" screen, it probably wouldn't exactly all flow together well. Most of the first book involves the pilgrims telling their tales as they make their way towards the big confrontation. Most of the 2nd book is shit hitting the fan, as it relates to each of the individual stories, as well as the events in the framing story, and ties them all together.

The two Endymion books read more as a straight adventure story, without much "flashback" narrative, and more closely follows the characters straight through to the end. There's still a bit of framing story, as the main character is telling this story from the end point (or actually, writing it down), but it's easier to follow without as many breaks.

Anyway, it's lunch time now, so back to reading book 1. I'm currently somewhere in the Poet's backstory :)

I read all four of the Hyperion series a couple of years ago, and while they were well worth reading, they honestly didn't make me think of Lost. But that's just my my 2 cents. But do enjoy the series!
