Anyone get the rereleased TOS films DVDS?

What's the thing with TMP?

Why can't I buy the single dvd version of ST TMP in the UK anywhere?!
I already own the SE version and wanted the original cut too. I can't seem to find anyone who sells it. Is it not being relaeased with the others?

I have always hated the changes made to TUC for home video. Thankfully the version in the Blu-Ray set does NOT have the ridiculous Scooby-Doo ending or any of the other changes. The change they made to TUC that I have always hated was the part where Scotty slides down the pole and complains that Azetbur "never shed one bloody tear." In the original version, it dissolves from Azetbur saying "Kirk will pay for my father's death" to the trial. I think that is much more effective than a straight cut to the Scotty/Spock/Valeris scene.

I saw all of these movies in the theater so many times as a kid that I literally have them memorized. I am thrilled to have nice copies of them as I remember them. I sure wish George Lucas would pay us the same courtesy.

Yeah, that Scotty scene was unnecessary, but I will say that me and a friend had a good laugh over the line "I bet that Klingon bitch killed her father!" It was just so out of left field, since we weren't expecting it, having seen it in the theater like, 6 times. Then Scotty goes on to lecture Spock like he's talking to a child. "They don't place the same value on life that WE do, Spock!"

It was released in Region 4 (Aust.), and we use Region 2 (UK) cover art. So it'll be out there somewhere. Ask your stores to check their computer listings.

In the UK it's only available in the box set, but I know that at least in Germany it's also available seprerately. It's supposed to have the same content as the UK version, only the cover is in German.

Thanks for the input fellas. Can anyone tell me why Paramount has decided not to release it seperately in th UK?

I was unaware of those new commentaries. Sounds like quite an interesting assembly of Trek figures. Certainly something to look for on eBay (not paying full price just for new commentaries!)

I bought the Blu-Ray box set today. So far, I've watched TMP and TWOK. After hearing how bad the other movies were in comparison to TWOK, I was really impressed with the visual quality of TMP. I didn't care much for TMP growing up, but I find I like it more and more as I get older. I'll most likely be watching the rest of the movies this weekend.

The new special features are mostly nice from what I've seen so far. I've enjoyed the two on ILM special effects that are on the TWOK and TSFS discs. At least some of the special edition features are there, too.

One and five cannot be bought separately it seems. I dunno why. Finished watching the others last night. Commentaries very good, though they seem to be made up of one person who is serious about the film, and the other person trying to make jokes at every turn. I'd love Ronald D. Moore to do a commentary on every film, and every episode of DS9!

They're only $14 each in Big W. That, too, me, is worth a new commentary.

^ Are the new commentary tracks in addition to those on the original Special Edition DVDs?

If so, I could probably justify getting them and donating my old copies to the local fan club. If not, I think it would be a waste of money and shelf space to have two copies of the same film, with the only difference being a couple of hours of commentary (though I'd be tempted for Ira Behr - great to have him still involved in Trek in some fashion).

I'd probably go for the box set rather than the individual discs to get the Captains' Summit bonus. I haven't seen that for less than $99.

No, these new commentaries replace the old ones. The old DE and SE commentaries of TMP, ST II and ST VI wouldn't have matched the original visuals and running times anyway. The new DVDs are the original theatrical versions.

I've seen five available separately, just not one.

Interesting, as the little insert in the DVDs only shows 234&6. I wonder is there some rights issue on the DVD that prevents 1 or 5 being released in Ireland. I know on the commentary for the last episode of season 3 of Who, John Barrowman, David Tennant and Freema Agyeman sang a few lines of a song, for which the BBC did not hold the rights for in America and had to put a different commentary track on the American releases. Maybe something similar here?

Seems very strange that 2,3, 4 and 6 are on sale bu 1 nad 5 aren't. Does anyone have Paramount's UK email addy?

I do know about the R4 disc but I didn't want to pay a lot to double dip as the others (individually - 2,3,4,6, ) are going for about a fiver each!

Just to clarify.......

THe Blu-rays of movies 2-6 DO have BOTH the old and new commentaries.

The previous commentaries for 2 & 6 have been adjusted to eliminate the portion that comments on footage from the extended parts.

The standard DVDs only have the new commentary for space peasons (or because they want the Blu-rays to have more features to justify the higher price.)

They of course could not include the DE commentary for TMP because the entire commentary is commetning on the new cut, FX etc.

Thanks for the clarification.

That might make it worth it should I ever move to blu-ray. Of course, they may have another re-release by that point...

More likely space reasons. If you notice, the standard DVDs don't repeat any extras from the DE/SCE double-disk releases; while the movie is a repeated dip, the extras are brand-new.
