In the three book DS9 series called "Millennium" there is reference to Picard being obsessed with building the "largest starship in history".
There are few references to the design of the ship IIRC, but I do remember something about the ship having "dozens of transwarp engines" and that the overall designed seemed somewhat vaguely similiar to the Defiant.
It was mentioned that only the upper most decks were for the crew with the rest for equipment, engines, shields, weapons..............
Anyone ever taken a shot at drawing a ship like that?
