Anyone else writing a book?

Alternatively just set up your own publishing company and do a deal to outsource the distribution with an existing publishing house. You end up keeping much more of the profits. A friend did this and is making good money as a result. A bit of capital outlay, and a bit of bureaucracy, but nowhere near as much as you'd think. You do need to be familiar with basic business principles and also understand the basics of marketing though.

I once wrote a book.

No wait.

I mean, ran a book.

I suggest you read this article which sheds some light on "Melrose Books."

Essentially, they are a self-publishing service, they just don't openly say so. And if you do want to self-publish, there are sites where you can do it at no cost to yourself, such as Lulu and CreateSpace. There is absolutely no reason to pay for the privilege, whether you intend to self-publish or go a more traditional route.

Thanks for the article. And thanks for the advice too, knew TrekBBS people would come through! I was on the fence about it but I'd rather not pay.

But they did send me a report about my book which is helpful.

Another publisher said they'd get back to me within a few weeks so waiting for them now I guess.

Glad to be of help! You should always investigate any publisher you're interested in, even before you submit your book.

So here's a head scrather folks: I'm plotting out a novel-- taking a breather on some other projects to get some perspective-- set in and around my hometown, using a few notable local haunts that are just another part of life and growing up around here but none of our local personalities, everything is just set dressing. Now here's the problem: after I knock this thing out-- the ideal is in its infancy-- should I get a legal-beagle to look things over and advise me on what does and doesn't need changing, or should I just cut the headache out and change things from the get go?

If you're talking about real places (or people), as long as you don't put in anything that is both a) untrue and b) malicious, you won't find yourself in any legal hot water.

I don't know though it seems quite a few publishers like authors to subsidise the costs.

I am an editor for the 6th largest academic publisher in the USA (Cengage Learning). I can't talk about how things are done in the UK.

I can tell you, however, that no legitimate US publisher will ask authors to put up one dime of costs. The standard industry publishing agreement is for an author to receive a royalty on net sales, and then usually to get a small advance on those sales. The terms on which that advance is payable, or if there is an advance, is negotiable (some authors, for example, forgo any advance for a higher royalty—especially if they already wrote the book before signing with the publisher). But the publisher subsumes the costs of publication. That is the entire reason that the publisher can legitimately claim the lion's share of the profits. The publisher is taking all the risk, putting its own money into the printing, marketing, distribution, and so on.

Any situation in which you are paying someone else to print your book is simply a marketing/distribution deal. You wrote the book, you print the book, and rather than paying an independent marketing firm up front to market and distribute your book, you're paying them a royalty. If you're going to do that, you better be very sure that they have a very solid marketing, distribution, and sales record. Otherwise, you will have paid thousands of dollars to print a lot of books that sit in your closet (or a warehouse).

Honestly, If your book doesn't find a traditional publisher, I think you'd be far better off going the self-publishing route with Print On Demand and eBooks than paying thousands for a huge print run and giving up royalties. I am in the process of writing fiction myself, and I plan to do exactly that if I cannot find a reputable US publisher.

Chapter 18 is now written and if RL does not interfere, I should have it typed up by this afternoon.

Vanity publishing is a legal scam.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Chapter 18 = 1,850 words, bringing my grand total up to 31,361 words.

Well, my update: I plan to make some copies of my art and send out my next submission Monday. Here's hoping for better news this time around!

The places are real-- mostly old and abandoned, closed down, etc, the sort of places folks shouldn't hang out but do  As for people, no real people just combination, exaggerations, and characters of the more local flavor of traits.

Best of luck! Hang in there!

Yeah, I don't see any legal issues there. You can't get in trouble writing about real places like that. Hell, there are people who write about real places they've never been to, and screw it up because they didn't do the research... I suspect people are more offended by that than they would be by someone who's actually been to the places involved and knows what he's talking about!

Now that I've moved to the US and am settling in, I hope to get more of my novel written quickly. If I'm lucky then I can have the first draft finished and supplemental research underway by this time next year.

Sweet!

I have only written the first chapter of my next book. I have focused more on this group project I'm doing. I went through all the chapters written thus far and pointed out inconsistencies and problems. Things are going well, though.

I finished a story on Sunday and now am trying to finish something I haven't worked on in about a year. Probably longer than that. It's easier to get back into than I thought it would be.

I also heard back from another publisher today, I heard a few weeks ago that the initial review of my manuscript was favourable and I had to send them a copy of it on cd. The letter today was just saying thanks for the cd and they'll let me know when the Board of Publishers have discussed my work.

Seconded! :techman:

I'm having focus disorder at the moment. once I put away the book I was working on and starting working on other stuff, the ideals came flooding in, so now I'm constantly scribbling notes and plotting out more projects than there is a snowball's chance in hell of me accomplishing

I'm doing pretty bad as far as being creative lately.

All I've accomplished is getting a poem written and a graphic done, for a Christmas present. The rest is managerial stuff on my group project. Bleh!

Just typed up chapter 19 which was 2,122 words (one of the longest chapters thus far I might add) which brings the total past the 1/3 mark: 33,506 words.

Here's hoping I can keep the momentum going and get the next few chapters done before the xmas/new year period. I want to write 16,500 words in the next 3 weeks.
