Anyone else writing a book?

I wrote a short story for my english class in HS and got an A...I want to write a book, got alot of ideas and stories playing out in my head...for some reason I can't write. If I sat down and took it serious maybe I could get a whole book done.

Discipline, discipline, discipline. It is easily the hardest part of writing a book.
QFT.

Now that I know when and where my visa interview is, I don't have to worry about anything. I'm hoping my blood pressure will go down and then I can just get my visa and leave the UK.

In the meantime, I'm done procrastinating and will try to get my novel moving again. Chapter 15 was just shy of 2,200 words, bringing the total word count to 26,848. Chapter 16 will be short and 17 will be back at normal length, so I'm hoping that between them I'll breach the 30k mark.

Where do you start? Make up characters first, do a broad outline of the story??? Help me out. :) Please

Normally, I start with one of two things:

1. A broad story idea, often a "what if..?" type proposition.
2. An intriguing character sketch (in my head, not a drawing.)

#1 is usually the way I go. I'll have a basic idea, something simple, like "a story about a man from a war-torn future who tries to change it in the past." Of course, just about any idea is going to be a cliche from such a vague description, so you start to flesh it out. Not necessarily by writing an outline, but you can look at it and ask, "What can I do with this? What would make this an interesting idea to explore? What kinds of characters would best fit into it?"

At a minimum, you need your idea and at least one character. From there, you can start writing. Just let the story flow from the character(s) and your premise. Up-front planning works for some people, but I find it takes the fun out of it.Instead, wait until you've made some progress writing the story before you get too deep into planning. You have your idea, you have characters, you should be able to get a good start just from that. As you go, start planning further and further ahead. Consider an act-based structure (3, 4, or 5 acts) to ensure you have a good flow and pace to your story.

The main things to keep in mind are, regardless of your initial premise, you need to have some kind of resolution or final exploration of it. The resolution may be entirely character-based, too--maybe the whole point of the story is that the exploration of the premise changes your protagonist's outlook. But you should definitely have both: a good story arc, and a good character arc. They can be one and the same, you just need to have them! A plot that goes nowhere is boring. A character who doesn't evolve isn't interesting.

All of these are just general guidelines. I strongly suggest taking notes before you start and as you go along. Keep track of character details, plot points, things like that. You don't have to be incredibly organized, just take some care and pay attention to details.

If you'd like some more information--like a really extensive character biography form, some planning tools, stuff like that--PM me and I'll be happy to help you out.

This is pretty good for now. I will let you know if I need anything to help me along...Thanks! :)

^You give some really exceptional advice on writing!

I just realized that it's been only a week and a half since I submitted my book. It feels like months! I suppose if one measures time by how often she checks her email for a response, and notes that I've been checking mine about every hour rather than my usual 2 or 3 times daily, then it is easy to see why it seems that so much time has passed!

Yeah, it's best not to get me started. I'll never shut up about it! :p But thank you!

I am anxious to find out as soon as you do. I can't imagine what the waiting is like!

Now up to 27,670 words. Chapter 17 is posing a few problems for me. Going to get off the computer and try and figure them out now.

Or, Jetfire, The Dead Nations, if you're me and about to embark on Nano (for the fourth year, you would think I'd learnt by now!) you open Word and just start typing. ;)

Don't worry, I'll update everyone as soon as I get my rejection letter!
;)

^ Here's hoping it's a pleasant surprise and not a rejection!

I have done three editing passes. I spent this evening typesetting and formatting. It's looking pretty sharp. Guess I should work on the cover next. I'm just so paranoid I've missed stupid little errors, and no one will go over it for me because it's almost 150K words. Oh well.

Errors always sneak by. With my anthology, both myself and my Sister read through the final draft several times and still some typos got by. They were all artifacts of OCRing typewritten documents, but we still should have caught them....

Tell them the truth! Tell them about all those poor widows and orphans!
