Anyone else tired of the time travel gimmick?

With respect to number6's list above:
Absolutely, "City on the Edge of Forever" and "Cause and Effect" are great episodes, and I would count separately (i.e., as a meritorious comedy) ST: IV. But is anything else on this list really that enduring? "Time's Arrow" was as contrived as could be, and all that really sticks with me is the fairly convincing Mark Twain. And although "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" had many fine moments, the resolution of the story ("replacing" the Earth guys into their lives such that they didn't remember) never made much sense.
Whether or not something on that list is "enduring" or not doesn't seem to enter into it. This thread is about who is or isn't tired of time travel and those are some pretty entertaining uses of time travel in Star Trek. I prefer alternate reality episodes and the earlier "Twilight Zone"-like episodes. I don't know about how "into " this new film I will be, but Time Travel is certainly not any deal breaker here.

Yes - tired of it.

My problem is, if you are the Borg and you fail at stopping ZC in FC, why don't you send ANOTHER cube back.....or fifty THOUSAND cubes?!?

Hell - if THAT fails, go back to the tenth century and simply blow up the Earth. No resistance there.

Like the powers of Heroes and like Q, give something enough power and when they don't utilize it fully, you only succeed in making THEM look dumb.

Well said. My post is not a gripe against the new movie (which I'm excited to see). I just hate time travel a lot. I'm glad you even mentioned Heroes. Time travel ruined that show, amongst other things.

The problem with time travel is it does make people look dumb. The Temporal Federation=stupid idea that makes no sense. As someone else pointed out, bad guys in Trek could easily wipe out humanity. Apparently, time travel is super easy. Unless we're expected to believe that the Temporal Federation is always protecting Earth (minus the times in the show where our heroes had to fix time on their own?).

Anywho, I agree with those that said time travel is overused and a poor deus ex machina. Especially the new little reset button that comes with it.

I don't know if it's rumors or now, but if it's true that the "changes" (which are debatable BTW) stem from Nero's time travel, then that will suck...

From what I have read of the story, it's not just the use of time travel that annoys me, it's the fact that JJ/Orci/Whoever feel they have come up with this oh so novel and brand new and exciting story.

We've seen about 28 seasons of ST now, you idiots.

We've seen it all.

Get over yourselves.

Well for what it's worth, Nimoy thought it was pretty good too (and he could see what a piece of shit Generations would turn out to be, so obviously he has some judgement).

Personally I don't have that big a problem with time travel in the ST series, but it definitely feels like it's been overused in the movies. Three times in ten movies should be enough.

Particularly with this movie, I was hoping we could get a fresh start and not have to deal with anything in the 24th century at all. Don't try to explain or rationalize it, and just reboot the damn thing.

Oh well, if it means we get more of Nimoy in this movie, I guess I can live with it.

It will probably work out this time. I still think it would have been better to have had future Spock reflecting on his first mission with Kirk. It could have been when Spock is near death in the 25 Century or during a similar crisis. I guess Nimoy would not have wanted to be in the film like that. As for Nero, there is no need for him to come from the future, except for his superior ship and weapons.

I'm tired of it, but I'm also looking forward to it being used for a productive purpose -- rebooting a dead franchise and giving us a new alternate timeline full of new Trek stories.

I'm not tired of the gimmick itself, just an improper use of it. The gimmick can serve as a great storytelling device if done correctly. However, I do agree that it is one of those story devices you don't want to think about too hard or everything just stops making sense.

No. My second favorite series next to ST is Doctor Who. If it were not for the TT aspect of this film putting the past in danger I would not be as open to all the changes within it.
Doctor Who uses Time Travel in a very compelling way. In Trek, it's lame and merely a reset-button device. The only true, legitimate Time Travel stories in Trek (IMHO) are ST:IV and ST:TNG Yesterday's Enterprise; Cause and Effect.

Yep, sick of time travel.

They ought to just rename the franchise Time Trek and be done with it.
