Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclopedia?

Captain Zog

Bought it around my Nan's 79th Birthday in July 1998. That's how I learned the titles of Star Treks III and IV. In that pre-Internet era (didn't get a computer til 2001) the encyclopedia was a goldmine of (then more or less current) information. Seems very quaint now with all the sites out there dedicated to the Trek-verse. Very dated too. Reminds me of simpler times.

Better suited for the General Trek Discussion forum

I still have that, even though I ended up with more up-to-date versions. There I times I miss those quaint times without computers messing up my banking!

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

I have an older one that includes information up to season 1 of DS9, I think. I suppose if they were to print an up-to-date version, the book would be at least twice as thick.

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

The Trek Encyclopedia I have is was published in 1999, and later the added 128 pages of information. However, even with the update it still only covers up to season 5 of Voyager and has no references about Enterprise. It would be great it they could publish an encyclopedia that included all Trek series and Films, that will probably not happen...

Resistance is Futile

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

i've got two versions of the encyclopedia one with the supplement of 128 pages covering everything to season five of voyager and the other one which seems to be the mark one version or something, havent read it in a long while but i think that may be the one that only covers up to season 1 of ds9

Thats the version I've had on my shelf for years. It's really odd looking at it now seeing as theres so much more to add to it.

Have they ever updated the Chronology?

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

I used to love the reference books in the pre-Internet days! I have two copies of the encyc. and the chronology. I used to love reading those things. Although, memory-alpha has kind of made them obsolete.

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

There is still something to be said for having a paper copy to flip through when you don't want to be on a computer. I have multiple copies of the encyclopedia that I got for gifts in '95. If they were to release a new complete version(pre-Abrams Trek) I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

I have a few editions of the encyclopedia. I devoured it and read it repeatedly. Now I never look at it and rely on Memory Alpha and the companions.

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think the version I have was published somewhere around 1996 or 1997, because it has very limited info on the Enterprise-E (so I think it was around the time FC came out).

I actually remember that one being released then realising mine was out of date. Now I'm missing six years of DS9, all of Enterprise and Voyager and every TNG era movie.

Thats a lot of stuff...

I had the CD version too... but I can't remember when that was released or what was on it.

Got that as well. IIRC, it was relased about the same time as the print edition with the supplemental pages. Haven't looked at it for awhile because am not sure it'll run on vista and haven't really been inclined to fight with it.

Personal Opinion: if we can't get a new print edition from Pocket, how about a new CD-ROM version?

It won't. At least it won't on mine. None of my old Trek stuff will operate on Vista :(

As for print and CD options... I'd say it was a good plan. I personally prefer books as resources, but the CD's have nice little video extras and would likely have a great LCAS interface and graphics, though I could find most of them on YouTube.

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

I have the encyclopedia. It needs to be updated with the rest of DS9 and Voyager, all of Enterprise and Nemesis

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

I have it on my living room bookshelf. Still get great fun out of browsing through it for references every now and then. Good and all as memory alpha is, I still prefer to flick through the pages of a book!!

Regards

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

i own the original and the second versions. i never bother with the v2.5 one with the supplement.

i also own the 2 versions of the chronology.

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

The editors have stated that it's not just the printing costs, nor the fact that bookshops don't want to stock lots of copies of such a (currently) slow-selling, hefty volume. It's paying a writer and layout artist, and the long development, research and fact-checking costs, whether it be for a print or electronic version.

Re: Anyone else own a copy of the late 90s edition of the ST Encyclope

There's a FAQ in the TrekLit forum that addresses the issue, though Ian sums it up here.

Oh, to be a moderator and be able to ensure that threads about Star Trek books go to the forum about Star Trek books.

Agreed.

Great thread by the way, I completely forgot I owned a German copy of the encyclopedia  *note to self* Remind me to browse some of the cardboard boxes in my parent's basement.
