anyone else looking forward to TDTESS?

Rÿcher

Fleet Captain
TDTESS=The Day the Earth Stood Still

I know I am. I haven't seen the original in its entirety yet. I hope to soon.

I'll be going to the midnight premiere on the 11th. Can't wait. I love movies with a message like this one appears to have.

I'm reticent...this rendition is clearly vastly different from the original. That might be a good thing but who knows? :)

It does look very different, and stylized. I love the original, but I'm very interested in seeing this, even though I find Keanu Reeves annoying.

The trailers look quite moody, and I kind of hope that continues through the feature and isn't just a marketing artifact.

I'm intruiged enough to go see it, but still apprehensive. The original is a classic, and I only hope they can do the source meterial justice. Still, this does look very very different from the original film.

I was worrried until I first saw the original trailer, because the original is one of my absolute favorites, but I liked what I saw, and I'm still liking what I've seen.

I'm looking forward to not having to hear Keanu say "You should let me go" again, I've seen that ad one to many times.

Keanu Reeves couldn't hold a candle to Michael Rennie.

I'll wait until this comes out on DVD, unless I have some cash and time to waste on some afternoon during the Matinee hours.

Keanu was cast as Klaatu for all the reasons they wanted to avoid when they case Micheal Rennie. That alone suggests the new guys don't get it, don't care to get it, and are happy with their payday.

I'm not sure about this one yet. I'm a huge fan of the original. My dad and my uncle are both big fans of 50s sci-fi and TDTESS was one of their favorites, along with the original War of the Worlds. We actually drove hours to see the original TDTESS on the big screen when it was shown at a few small movie houses years ago. My dad has said he'll go see it with me, but he's hugely skeptical. And we can't convince my uncle to go just yet. At any rate, I'm mostly interested to see how they handle Gort. I'm not a big fan of Keanu (would've preferred someone with more nuance and depth) and I don't like that it seems that the original themes have been changed. -Dan

I think Michael Rennie did a better performance in Cyborg 2087 than The Day the Earth Stood Still. ;)

Kidding aside, the notion that Michael Rennie was one of the great thespians seems to be newly minted.

Although the original is indeed a very good movie, its plot at one point requires that the alien spaceship parked in downtown DC is left unguarded---except for a board fence---at night. Ouch. Plus, the climax deliberately mutes reaction to the threat to have robots annihilate humanity if they don't get their act together. In one sense that doesn't matter---the point was the repudiation of war as Realpolitik, not the character reactions to being deprived of their favorite hobby. But it does sort of impose a viewpoint on the audience.

As for the obligatory Keanu hate, I still think that it must make a difference if your first Reeves movie was River's Edge instead of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

I just watched the original last night (having picked up the 2-disc special edition DVD on Tuesday). I'm interested in the new version, knowing full well that it will be different from the original. I hope it works, but if it tanks...well...I've still got my DVD :)

While I wish they'd called it something else if they were going to change it as much as they apparently have, my major problem with it is Keanu. :vulcan: I may go to the theaters if it garners universally great reviews... otherwise I have a policy against paying any of my money to see him "act".

The original is one of the most un-modern sf movies ever lol... it's far too talky to work today.
