Anyone Else Listen To Tori Amos?

I pretty much only listen to Tori, it is hard to find others who adore Her. I'm a non-gay guy by the way, either you have to be a female or a gay male from what I've been told to like Tori's music.

Nonsense, I am straight and Tori Amos is my favourite singer.

I'm a straight male who still listens to some of Tori's earlier stuff. Album-wise, she was hit-or-miss with me. LE was brilliant, got me into her; UTP was alright, had some good stuff on it, wasn't as enthusiastic about it as I was for LE but still got some good listening out of it; BFP I never got into, barely listened to it as an album; FTCH I loved, some of my favorite Tori stuff that I still listen to regularly came from that one; then a slump for me, as TVAB and SLG didn't do much for me, and I barely listened to them at all. After two albums in a row that didn't do it for me, I stopped buying them.

So the last one that I bought was from what, 2000? I've considered giving her another shot. How many have I missed? Knowing which ones I like and which ones I don't, would the Tori fans here recommend any in particular that they think would be up my alley?

Like other artist at her level of success the publicity push seems to be more on her bio then her music. After trying her out she didn't become a must buy.

I'm also as straight guy who likes Tori Amos, although I have to admit only a handful of songs really impress me:

Girl
Little Earthquakes
Raining Blood
Raspberry Swirl
Spark
Space Dog
Siren

There are other songs I like, but those are the ones that stand out the most for me.

I really like Tori Amos, but her last 3 albums have been waaaay too long. Little Earthquakes is still my favourite.

This is one of my pet hates, being told what music you're supposed to like because of what demographic you fit into. I knew a black man who liked rock and used to get mocked by other black guys because he listened to 'white man music'. Its idiotic.

Also I'm a gay guy and everytime I mention Tori Amos, I get a response of 'who?' from other gay men, so I don't think she as big this side of the tracks as people think. Personally I think shes a hit with people who like the piano as an instrument and that isn't anything to do with who you sleep with.

Anyway Tori. Love her. She went a bit off the tracks with Boy for Pele and Venus. The Beekeeper and Scarlets Walk suffered slightly from dullness. However Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink are excellent records. American Dolls was merely just good. All the covers on Strange Little Girls are now the definative versions of those songs as far as I'm concerned. Its sad to see talented women like her get pushed aside to make way for Paris Hilton/Hannah Montana records.

I bet I'm the only one here who remembers Y Kant Tori Read.

My favorite song of hers is The Happy Worker. (from the Toys soundtrack)

I doubt it. The amount Tori has critized Y Kant Tori Read, I think that anyone who has ever read an interview with her will at the very least be aware of her bile towards Y Kant, even if they've never heard any tracks. (I've only heard The Big Picture. I though it was actually alright in a 80s pop kind of way).

I used to have Little Earthquakes on tape, and I wore that sumbitch right the fuck out! I got turned on to Tori Amos by the girl I was dating right after high school and for my first couple years in the Navy. Once she and I broke I couldn't listen to her at all for several years without breaking down and crying remembering my ex. Of course, it's been fourteen years since then and I have long, LONG since gotten over that girl, I recently re-discovered Tori Amos and have been getting acquainted with some of her other stuff, post Little Earthquakes.

"Raspberry Swirl" and "Spark" are also amongst my strong favorites, whereas "Girl" and "Space Dog" are memorably enjoyable to me. Amongst my other strong favorites are "Leather", "Happy Phantom", "Cornflake Girl", "The Waitress", and I even came to enjoy "Bliss", although the rest of TVAB was largely forgettable to me. So since nobody's answered my question yet, if I were to try one of Tori's albums since Strange Little Girls, which would you recommend?

She went a bit off the tracks with Boy for Pele and Venus.
So it's not just me!

Since I recall one of those being "Happiness Is a Warm Gun", I'm afraid I'm gonna have to throw in a...

SACRILEGE!!!!!

But I did come to enjoy her cover of "I'm Not in Love" on that one, though I found the album as whole to be as forgettable as TVAB.

I've loved Tori ever since I saw the video for "Silent All These Years" on MTV or VH1--can't remember which one, but it was back when they both still played videos.

My favorite album of hers is probably From the Choirgirl Hotel--I got it in college when it first came out and just love it. Boys for Pele and Strange Little Girls are the ones I'm least likely to pop in the CD player, but I love songs off of both, and "Hey Jupiter" from the former is one of my all-time favorite Tori songs.

I more or less feel the same way you do about the albums, though I might like To Venus and Back a little more. I love "Concertina," and some of the other tracks are enjoyable, too. Strange Little Girls has some great covers, but I prefer Tori originals.

I'd recommend either Scarlet's Walk or The Beekeeper, with a slight preference for the latter. Then again, "A Sorta Fairytale" is one of my other favorite Tori songs.

I doubt it. (I've only heard The Big Picture. I though it was actually alright in a 80s pop kind of way).

She's started playing "Cool on Your Island" live--I think it might even be on the live disc of Venus. I actually like the album, but it's not really in line with Tori's other music.

I remember seeing Y Kant Tori Read? in a record store back in '88, and turning up my nose thinking, "Great, another illiterate metal band." Then 4 years later I found out what it was all about and wished I'd picked the damn thing up, because it was a collector's item! (My first proper exposure to Tori was also the "Silent All These Years" video.)

I almost picked up Scarlet's Walk when it was the latest album. I was intrigued by it being a concept album, but was afraid that it would be umpteen variations of "Home on the Range (Cherokee version)".

I too am that rare straight guy who loves Tori. Hell, she's the only person I've ever seen in concert! My two favorite bands are Bad Religion and Tori Amos. However I really don't care for any of her recent stuff. Everything after "Venus and Back" has been 75% crap as far as I'm concerned. The first 5 albums are where it's at. Not only has the content lost my interest, but her voice just ain't what it used to be. Listen to her first couple of albums; she has the most beautiful voice in existence. But in the later ones, she sounds like a chain smoker, almost.

As a matter of fact, if I ever get my sci-fi TV show made, it's going to have about a dozen Tori Amos "music video" sequences in it ;)

I actually just read Comic Book Tattoo, which is a massive 500 page Tori Amos comic book only $20 on Amazon. It's basically five page comic book stories that are interpretations of her songs. It's a hell of a deal at that price but I found it to be extremely disappointing. The "interpretations" usually have almost nothing to do with the songs.

My favorite song is "Space Dog". Others: Silent All These Years, Winter, Happy Phantom. God, Wrong Band, Cornflake Girl, Honey. Mr Zebra, Talula. Spark, Raspberry Swirl, Liquid Diamonds, Hotel, Playboy Mommy, Purple People. Concertina, Josephine, Datura.

Yes, and she's telling me to kill. Kill them all. Carve their guts out. Jump up and down on their heads until they pop like an over-filled water balloon. Burn their houses down with their families inside. Take their puppies out in the yard and... oh, sorry, that was Guns and Roses. My bad.

And that's the perfect segue into this quote....

Butthead: “This chick is psycho!”
Beavis: “Yeah, it’s like, you know, like she’s pretty hot, but it’s like, I don’t know, man. I might stay away from her.”
Butthead: “Yeah. It’s like, she’s got a nice body and everything, but if you went out with her, she’d probably, like, put a rat’s head on your bed or something.”
Beavis: “That wouldn’t be so bad, it’s just she’d probably chop off your wiener, too.”

I bought her first major album back in the early 90's and genuinely liked it... but there was way too much man-hate in her lyrics for my taste. Haven't bought another of her albums since.
