Anyone else anti-social networking?

I like Twitter because it forces you to be concise and to-the-point. I like Facebook because of the photo / video integration and its more visual aspect.

Being in destination marketing, I find social networking to be a wonderful tool (and the integration between social and email is really an under-utilized world). It's a great way to connect with like-minded people in my field and share ideas. For example, I've met DJ Waldow (director of community at Blue Sky Factory, an email service provider) only once, at an email user conference last year. But we go back and forth on Twitter several times a day. Same with Ann Handley, the co-author of the awesome book Content Rules. Those people, and many other brilliant minds in the field, are halfway across the country from me -- but thanks to social networking, we can hook up instantly.

yeah i dont care for them much either. I dont even like celphones. I only have one for safety reasons & when I need to call my family/doctor etc...

I'm not anti social-networking but i don't use any of these sites because i just don't care.

My friends know my likes and dislikes and they are normal enough not to need to know what i did the whole day or any rant i might have to get rid off.

I can contact them multiple ways.. mobile phones, phone at home, email or in some cases a chat room where some us hang around.

Some of the features are quite good.. artists use such sites to get their stuff out and it's a quick and easy way to drum up interest but i'd never post private information for everybody to see.

My relationship status or anything else is nobodies business and it will stay that way.

Yet looking at your thread history brings up these:

Not far away from stuff people post on Facebook or Twitter. And the last one even contains info about your relationship status. ;)

No offense intended, I'm just curious about the rationale.

Yeah, I don't understand people posting on a TrekBBS to say they hate social networking.

What do you think this is?

^This is Trekkies-Anonymous. With FB & Twitter, people he actually knows IRL could read those! :alienblush:
(slight sarcasm intended)

Oh, I forgot to mention that I do use one form of social networking, LinkedIn. However, I use it for business networking only. It's been nice to find some former colleagues and at least have the ability to contact them if I ever need a reference.

I deactivated my facebook account like 4 years ago and don't do any of the other useless shit like twitter.

Also, The Social Network sucked ass.

Anti-social networking? Is that like Myspace for terrorists? Or teenagers who don't know when their sarcasm begins or ends?

Well said! I'm glad to see other people who don't worship it:bolian:

Why is it one extreme or the other? You can either worship it or hate it, but no inbetween is allowed?

Bingo. Yahtzee. Scrabble. Connect 4. You sank my battleship. Hungry Hungry Hippo.

I think most people just use it to stay connected with friends. I use it occasionally, sometimes more, sometimes less, and I also use Facebook to promote my business. There's a nice, large swath of in-between there.

Well, for me it isn't a matter of extremes. Everybody I want to stay in contact with lives within 20 miles of me so we can all see each other live whenever we want, so those online sites are pointless (for me, some of my friends do use them, but that's their business).

As for online interaction. That's what this place is for.

Also, it's all pointless.

No more or less so than most social interaction. Certainly no more pointless than posting in a topic about it on a Trek board.

Ideed!

I use facebook because it ia a convenient forum to see photos and video of my family in Seattle -- especially my baby nephew, whom I've watched grow up (well, up to 16 months!) on facebook. And the Scrabble of course!

I think things like foursquare are pretty silly -- I have one old high school acquaintance who uses it and it's a bit sad. She was such a lovely girl in high school, now all she ever seems to do is "check in" at the Rainforest Cafe and various other restaurants and shops at the mall. I personally would not use it, but whatever floats your boat.

I have no use for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, or any of that stuff.

And at first I thought the thread title referred to networking sites for anti-social people, which is a bit of an oxymoron.

Yeah, I don't hate it or anything, I just don't use mine. Maybe I need to start again; should probably get new friends first.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be signing up for Twitter yet... or ever.

I hate that some places want me to "friend" them on Facebook (which I don't have) in order to get a coupon or sample. Just give me the darn coupon, it is bad enough I now have to print the darn thing myself, using my ink and my paper!

A sampling of current Miscellaneous Forum threads;

Should I dress up as a Sailor Moon girl?
Just tanked a job interview...
What song are you listening to right now?
Your latest purchases...
What are you eating/drinking right now?
What did you have for dinner last night?

Yeah...Facebook is so silly and mundane.

I'm not a big fan of Facebook, though that is more to do with bad memories associated with a former girlfriend. Hardly ever communicated and seemed genuinely shocked I might want to have conversations with her. Would not hear from her all day, go on facebook and see she has been doing quizzes for the last two hours. If you have time to piss about on facebook quizzes for a few hours, you have time to reply to a text I sent.

anyway..

Twitter is the thing I dont like as it has given every idiot the presumption that their every thought and feeling is interesting enough to be heard. 99% of people just arent that interesting.

Nice hyperbole, but no-one actually uses Twitter in that manner. Try again.

I use facebook to kill time and offend random people. Tenuous connection to reality. Let the supreme overlords mine my data, I block their ads and piss on their products.
