Anyone else a fan of 'Soldier' (1998)?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
just wanted to say this is one of my favorite movies. excellent mix of sci-fi and action.

it's kind of similar to that episode 'Red Rising' S1E12 of Dark Angel with the Red Series. can anyone recommend other similar movies or shows that are similar? i'm really looking for another great movie to sink my teeth into.

In short: No.

I remember going into the flick as a massive Kurt Russell fan, and afterwards... with the exception of Sky High, I don't I have seen a Kurt Russell film since.

I recall finding it boring, depressing, and not very likable. I may have to give it another chance; maybe 13 years later I might have matured enough to find some enjoyment in it.

It is moderately entertaining, but it is somewhat ruined by the dark and murky look of many scenes and the central conceit of the super soldiers is stupid.

In the future, if we ever breed soldiers(unlikely, but whatever) we'll breed them for speed and intelligence, not strength and mindless discipline.

I thought it was okay... I was, uhm, 14 at the time... :D

Haven't seen it since. I'd probably hate it now...

I remember liking it when I saw it but I've only ever seen it the one time in the theatre. As I recall the blond in the movie was pretty hot.

Believe it or not, the producers of Soldier actually intend for it to take place in the Blade Runner universe. In fact, the writer once said that the film works best if you pretend that the soldiers are Replicants.

I love the movie, and think that it's great, and wish that it had been a success.

Agreed. I love it as well.

The fact that Kurt Russell has only around 100 words of dialogue (some of which are spoken off-screen) and has to do most of his acting with facial expressions and body language is amazing.

No. I was looking forward to it because of a) the writer of Blade Runner and Unforgiven, and b) Kurt Russell. Unfortunately it turned out to be dull both in story/character - it'd barely make a short story - and visually, as everything is just dim and murky, and surprisingly cheap-looking.

So, a massive disappointment.

I'd go along with just about ever word of this.

It just didn't fire my imagination at all.

First third or half is awesome.. the training of the special soldiers, their missions and how Russel is competing against the new breed of supersoldiers.

After that the movie drops very sharply.

I was lured in by the fact that it took place in the Blade Runner universe, but was disappointed when that wasn't really alluded to in the actual movie, other than a "blink and you'll miss it" moment when you see one of the BR police cruisers in a pile of trash. Some actual connection would have been nice.

That said, I did find it enjoyable and watch it when it's on the tube.

It's supposed to be connected to Blade Runner?

If I'd known that I would never have watched it. I hated Blade Runner.

Having had no idea, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Guess I'll just keep ignoring the Blade Runner aspects then.

yah, i agree with this.

the film is just pure awesome in the beginning with how the soldiers are trained.

when that scene where todd and the other are 2 soldiers are on the ground is over, the movie starts to decline.

still some great action towards the end.

AFAIK, Sgt. Todd's service record makes reference to BR as well.
