Anyone consider quitting Facebook because...

the only way to keep up w/ my godchildren

That's the only reason I'm still on-- to follow my niece and see photos. In general I just don't seem to enjoy the tone or content of the site-- it's like a big shark's mouth that grinds everything up.

Oddly though, I'm getting addicted to Twitter.

I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends living in other parts of Britain and around the world. Very few people I know locally are on my FB, and everything is locked down in terms of privacy. However I post rants and more personal stuff on my online journal, which is also completely friendslocked and, frankly, far more secure than Facebook. I've reconnected with a few old friends thanks to Facebook but also tend to cull my friends list a few times a year to get rid of people who, well, I don't really care about much (and I take no offense if they do that to me). I've always had less than 60 friends for this reason. And, like Miss Chicken, one of those friends is a hobby horse.

I have never used Facebook. I still do not understand why people choose to display every minute detail of their lives online. I do not use Twitter, MySpace, etc. for the same reason. I value my privacy. If this makes me a relic, then I prefer to be the relic Montgomery Scott found himself to be in TNG.

Me too. My life is pretty much compartmentalized into family, friends, work and online fandoms, and I like it that way.

Also, refusing to join Facebook because you 'value your privacy' is mental. You share what you want to share. It's not like you absolutely must disclose everything you're doing.

I've closed my account a couple of times, but family keeps badgering me to reopen it. Finally I got to a point where I use a fake name that only family knows is me (no surprise to them, I've used "pennames" in the real-world for piss away shit that isn't legally binding or under the oath of a court before), and post mindless "nerdy" type of bullshit that really isn't that interesting. I figure at some point they'll get the hint.

I have no desire whatsoever to contact any of the people I knew in high school.

(Sorry, I messed up the quote. That was scottpens, not Sector 7.)

Me neither. I was FB friends w/ a few very briefly. After a few exchanges of what we've been doing all these years -- or no exchanges at all -- we had nothing to say to each other.

Also your age makes a difference. If you were in college or university back when FB started, pretty much everyone has it. If you graduated before FB started, not as many of your peers will be online. FB is only useful if the majority of your peers are on it. That is the point of a social networking program.

Actually, the fastest growth on FB in recent years has been my age group -- those of us who were in college a couple generations, not years, before FB. If, by "peers", you mean age group, as you seem to, I disagree that FB is useful only if the majority are on it. My friends and contacts, both in real life and on-line, cover a wide age range.

I cull my list at least once a year, too, and stay at under 40 friends. No hobby horse for me, but I am friends w/ Wesley the Rabbit. :)

Sounds like some people are jealous because he's a billionaire - or because they don't know how to operate privacy settings.

Well Facebook can still sell your info that you aren't showing, but yes, people are morons.

The privacy settings are horrible set up, however you can make everything hidden.

That kind of stuff is all fine and good. But every. Single. Little. Detail. Is a bit much, no?

No... oh sec....

"Is taking a massive shit that won't come out... FML."

Me too - The range of people on Twitter and the speed I can read it is wonderful. It's a great combination of messages from famous people about what they're working on and little funny asides. Again, it all depends on who you pick to follow.

I find that the worst people to follow on Twitter are those who treat the place like some kind of IM substitute. That sort of microblogger bores me quickly.

I have briefly considered quitting Facebook before, but like others above have mentioned, I instead chose to decrease the number of friends and upped my privacy settings. It's especially great for keeping in touch with friends and family abroad.

Kept within certain boundaries, Facebook is fun and frankly makes life a lot easier. Just like when mobiles were becoming popular, there were those who said they didn't need them and preferred communicating the old-fashioned way. Those guys have slowly been worn down. The same will be true of networking sites. Perhaps one day soon, we'll be texting links of our "Facebook" profiles to future employers instead of sending CV's and covering letters.

The machine of progress... eventually it's going to mow you down.

I love my facebook account, though recently I have started paring it down. I have deleted A LOT of my friends (over 200 in the few months) because I realized that I just didn't care about these people anymore. I still have about 150, and I enjoy seeing their updates.

Mostly, though, I use it as a means to keep in touch with a lot of my friends who have moved away that I don't see very often. I've also "grown up" and have removed a great deal of my personal information from my page.

The creator, while possibly a giant douchebag, has nothing to do with my enjoyment of the website.

I've tried closing my account a couple of times, only to reactivate it because I get bored easily.

I know little about Zuckerberg's life, personality, or background apart from what I've read about him or what was shown in the movie The Social Network. He's a billionaire who has achieved great success in his life. I neither envy him nor hate him, but I do respect his accomplishments.

Several relatives are on FB, and I certainly enjoy being in the loop, seeing their pictures and activities. Same goes for old friends and acquaintance living in other states or countries. But that doesn't mean I spend every single minute of the day on FB. I spend a few minutes on average every day checking my Newsfeeds, and I also use it to vent occasionally.

I deleted my account a few months ago, but the other day I tried to play one of the games on my phone and it won't play, so I reactivated my account so I can play that game. Other than that I don't use it at all.

I'm considering getting rid of my account. I have lots of friends on it, but I myself just never really USE it, lol.

inventor/founder Mark Zuckerberg is a tremendous douchebag?

Whenever I see interviews of him, or read interviews about him or see his damn picture he just looks like the kind of jackass who could use a could punch in the face.

Then I guess the movie about him was accurate because he was portrayed as a jackass there as well.
