Anyone buying Titan's Star Trek Comic?

Sigh. As I said above, I'm not surprised. It's sad - as UK comics always seem to be a bit more 'fun' and take themselves less seriously than US ones (by that I mean the editorial and general layout - obviously the strips were the same!)

Obviously it's not an option anyway, but I'd be against the magazine incorporating any comic strip as well. I enjoyed it back in 1995, but now it would indeed be redundant. The magazine has moved on (though I still miss its unique British-based irreverence from the first few years).

Can't wait to see what Paul has in mind for the 15th anniversary...

Neither can I....

Er... It'll be US issue 25, and funnily enough I was discussing one item with Darryl Curtis, one of my illustrious predecessors, only a couple of hours ago.

I'll throw this open to the floor, since I am literally just starting to think about it - what would you like to see? (Bear in mind that issues 1-24 of the UK Mag are available as a CDROM, so we would be unlikely to print much from them)...

No pressure. 15th Anniversaries aren't usually treated to the same fanfare as a 10th or 20th. Just prior to Issue 1, there was that Movie Special reprint covering Star Trek Generations. Red cover, probably identical to the US Starlog one. Maybe it could be something like a flashback article to that film. An new interview with somebody done all those years ago in Issue 1 (or any early one). A look at everything that's happened since Star Trek Monthly hit the shelves. Actually scratch that. What with so many good things coming to a premature end... TNG on the big screen, Enterprise, the official Fan Club... that could make for depressing reading.

I'll have to dig out my back issues and come up with a more sensible suggestion... since you've got me all inspired now. :)

An updated version of New Trekkies Start Here..., the primer that used to be at the front of the early issues? A centre spread of every cover, including the Diamond exclusives from the US issues? Interviews with the previous editors?

A variant of one of those is already underway; I'll have to dig out the New Trekkies and see if that might be workable as we're already streamlining the content to reflect the new audience to an extent (NOT to the extent of saying "Captain Picard is a bald-headed man who is in charge of a later USS Enterprise 106 years after the events of the film you just saw, except in the original timeline where Spock came from...")

Maybe a chart or flow diagram is required there!

Actually you could carry on the two-page spread timeline from the Comic? I believe they got up to 2151 and the launch of NX-01, before being rudely interupted.

The magazine has come a heck of a long way from those early issues. I've spent a good hour reading through #1, which apparently came out 28th Febuary 1995. The date is mentioned in the back of the Generations Souvenir Magazine, a reprint of Starlog's title for the British market. I must've picked that up before going to see the film in cinemas.

The very first issue came with a fabulous free gift. Yes, a bookmark! We were ever so easily pleased back then! I managed to come away with a Data one, although if you shopped around you may have got Spock or Worf. The design was basic compared to now, particularly the covers which tended to be solo actor publicity shots. Inside the hot topics for news centred around Voyager's US TV launch and its upcoming release on VHS, some Generations coverage and news of DS9 Season 3 with the introduction of the Defiant, tempting audiences we hadn't immediately made the jump from TNG with some starship action.

Being British this was a different take than anything the Fan Club's Communicator or Starlog offered, more relevant to us, with reviews of merchandise occasionally unique here, in Europe or Australia. Anything from phonecards, the vast amount of CIC/Paramount videos, Titan novels (reprinting Pocket titles in a different number system), fan club addresses to keeping track of UK TV schedules. All that stemmed from the popularity of The Next Generation over here in the '90s which filtered down until Voyager ended.

With all that it was only natural that Issue 1 promoted an interview with Patrick Stewart to kick things off. Maybe it would an idea to catch up him for a 15th Anniversary celebration? I've heard that he's reticent when it comes to being interviewed about Star Trek, but perhaps spending sometime dicussing where his stage career is currently at, is a way in? His not too distant appearances with David Tennant and Ian McKellen. Assuming it's possible and he's agreeable, have a photo taken of him holding Issue 1 and the renumbered Issue 25 to tie it altogether. In preparation ask readers to email or write in, a question they always wanted to ask?

^ You never know, that just might be the thing that gets him to agree. He's one of the few key personnel we've not caught up with during my tenure...

As I recall, I got the Spock bookmark...

If there's anyone who's got a copy of the issue with the Tom Hardy interview (#117 as I recall) could they PM me on here please? It'll be quicker than trying to get one out of storage!!

Thanks

Paul

I'll see if I can dig it out. Dec 2002 or somewhere around that time? There's a chance I have it. I can't promise... so if anybody else has a copy handier.

#117 was Oct/Nov 2004, around the time ENT S4 began. There was special supplement on the first 3 seasons with that issue. Connor Trinneer & Bruce Hyde interviews, a look at Art Asylum figures... no Tom Hardy though.

Sorry - 107... teach me to do things without checking Memory Alpha!
