Anybody up for a challenge?

I have been toying with the idea lately of getting a new ship for my fan fiction series. Since I suck at anything relating to art or drawing, and having been impressed at some of the work displayed here, I was wondering if anybody would be willing to draw up a new ship design for me? I'm not looking for anything earth-shattering, just a profile view that I can put up on my expanded universe page. That said, if anybody wants to get into it, then don't let me stop you.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Name: USS Odyssey NCC-81639 (First of her class)
Type: Explorer
Size: Roughly equal with the Sovereign, no real particulars.
Arrangement: standard saucer, engineering hull and two warp nacelles
Time: 2379

The ship would be designed with a similar mission profile as the Galaxy-class. It would have to be capable of operating in deep space for several years at a time, and be able to defend itself against most threats, but not be so powerful that nothing could hurt it.

I'd stick with established kitbashes / variants that a reader would find a predictable product of battle-damaged wrecks salvaged, restored, rushed out of spacedock and pressed into service as a result of either Wolf 359 and/or The Dominion War.

Seeing as this is fan fiction, you can genuinely claim artistic license just lenient enough to suggest an NCC prefix such as the U.S.S. Odyssey-A, in honor of the ship lost at the start of The Dominion War.

I don't really just want to go and snag someone else's design, though.

I never liked the whole A, B, C, stuff. That's the Enterprise's thing.

As for kitbash, that's what it would be, but idea was that it would be a whole new design that is supposed to be the Federation getting back to its roots of exploration and discovery, not just war fighting.

I think the ABC thing is bogus. They had a chance to legitimize the method with the Yamato/1305-E, but failed (seriously) when they changed her registry [and not give a logical (if any) reason].

Well, after the Dominion War, the UFP should be ready to defend itself. Not bristling with weapons but quick enough to dogfight in an atmosphere or pick-off a "welcoming committee", but only if fired-upon, and then get the hell out of there and back to U.F.P. territory.

Well, there is always this concept which I started for another poster's fan fic but was ultimately abandoned. I never got to fully flesh the design out so if it works for you I could always do some sketches for your fan fic. If you'd want orthographic views that would take a while longer.

Flux Capacitor - That is an awesome design, it sort of reminds me of the Excelsior-class. Right along the lines of what I'm looking for. Do the nacelles have Bussard collectors?

hellsgate - I have a bit of a prejudice against yours because it reminds me of the Akiraprise, which was a design that I loathed. It seems a little small for what I had in mind.

USSGlenn - Very nice, but every time I look at it, it looks like the ship is upside down. Is there any way you could "flip" it over?

It's neat, but far too similar to the Nebula-class that my series already uses.

It can have them if you wish, this ship was abandoned in its very early design process so what you see is basically all that exists for it, there are no other views or details that have been hammered down.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for big, glowing nacelles.

Everything else is sweet though. Very graceful and almost avian looking.

I added some bussards to the engines and a bit of extra glow.

Do you need full schematics or just a collection of perspective views?

Would you be open to changing the neck at all? I'm thinking that it would look better if it were flush with the Engineering hull instead of having that indentation at the front.

Sure thing, I did two versions of the neck, with just minor variations in their slope angle.

The look of #2 is perfect, IMO. It seems to "grow" into the saucer more naturally than the first one. What kind of shape did you have in mind for the saucer? Is it rounded, or more like an arrowhead?
