Anybody Notice The Increase In TNG Bashing?

It's almost starting to be a trend since Trek's "decline". People coming out of the woodwork to take shots at TNG and it's legacy. Especially since they're dusting off Kirk and pushing those guys back into the mix.

All of a sudden, Picard and crew were always stodgy, stiff, uber-perfect and unrelatable. It was all technobabble and lacked drama. The 24th century was uptight and too advanced and convoluted to go forward. Where'd all this come from?

I hadn't noticed. And if it is happening, we shouldn't be surprised. As TOS aged, more and more people would complain about how "dated" it had become. And that's fine -- I still enjoy a Humphrey Bogart movie even if it lacks so-called modern standards.

TNG was a great TV series, in my mind, and other people are entitled to their opinions.

It's always been there. Some folks feel a need to take pot shots at the portion of Trek that does not meet their standards. It's does seem a little more prevalent these days for some reason.

I'd ignore it. It's not worth getting upset over. No matter what you do, some folks are just not gonna like this or that part of Trek.

Hey, I rank TNG #2 behind TOS because that's what I grew up on. I think TNG was great in many ways and it had the difficult job of following an all-time classic show in TOS.

There's room for both.

DS9 is another matter completely. Give me General Hospital anyday over that mess!

It goes is spurts. There is a time when it's "cool" to bash TNG, yet now it seems like people have taken a step back. Actually, it seems like the Bashing is less and less for any show lately, which is nice. I just ignore it, so I haven't noticed it lately.

When a show like TNG is popular it is going to be the object of derision. VOY tried being TNG; DS9/VOY/ENT weren't as popular in the mainstream as TNG; ENT fans went overboard on TNG bashing bcause of TATV included Riker and Troi and overshadowed their show, everyone wants dark and gritty and slam TNG as too PC and bland.

TNG is too old to be vogue and trendy, too new to be retro (but not by much). That's why.

TNG will likely make a comeback some day, but many of the episodes seem unwatchable to me 20 years on. TNG made enough fantastic episodes to ensure that it's legacy will live on.

Yep. TNG has been rubbished for years, often for reasons that don't really stand up to much scrutiny. To each their own, though.

TNG was extremely popular, so it must be a piece of garbage, so say the nay-sayers. I disagree.

There has been no ST series I haven't enjoyed a ton, so I'm totally with the TNG love.

Anyway, some fans love to bash TNG because "their" series (DS9/VOY/ENT) wasn't/isn't as popular. In Chicago, DS9 was hamstrung by airing on WGN, the home of Cubs baseball and Bulls basketball and was often prempted. That's why I gave up on it. In retrospect, I find I missed a great show. Thank heavens for DVD season sets!

VOY/ENT aired at a time when cable choices exploded and UPN was clueless at marketing, so there ya go. Lower ratings do not mean horrible show.

I wouldn't worry about it, such things come and go. If you like the show (or any other), then who cares what others complain about.

I have no reason to bash any Trek series. Never noticed out anything...well, you know, bad enough. So what do I care about people bashing my favourite TV-shows. Not at all.

And neither should you.

I never understood the need to bash anything, let alone a TV show. If I don't like something, than I'll just keep my mouth shut and I even don't venture into the respective forums. For example, I didn't care for Enteprise, so instead of going in there to make fun of people who do love it, I just go else where. Same to a lesser extent of Voyager, even though I liked that series somewhat. If someone likes something, that is their prerogative, and far be for me to bash what they like.

If it was Enterprise I would be out there with my baseball bat going after the show. With TNG, hey that is not right

Some things that people see as stuff that was bad about TNG are actually things that I find hilarious about the series. Can't name anything specific at the moment, but I recall there being at least one occasion where someone has said why a certain episode sucked, and their reason for it sucking happened to be the reason why I loved the episode! TNG's always good for a laugh at least, and I love some of the drama in it too. There's never been an episode I outright hated and would not ever watch again (though I'll admit I've seen "The Schizoid Man" on tv one too many times), but of course I haven't seen EVERY episode yet.

I betting some of it may be because the shows more about exploration and getting along than about kicking alien butt. Which sadly these days seems to be what most people expect from their SF.

Great, the reactionary rears his ugly head.

TNG is what kept Trek alive after Trek V. Without TNG Trek would've died out with "Final Frontier".

And no, the technobabble only really began after TNG.

The TNG crew weren't a bunch of perfect people, not by a long shot. That's just a biased generalization made by casual observations and not any real analysis of the characters.

There is no point going around and bash TNG. Sure you can, but why? Just because TNG was in the 1990's we cannot go around and use the values we have in the 2000's to make a different statement. Always think of the decade it was made in, and deal with it.
