There's a lot to be said for an old-fashioned coffee with cream and sugar...

That's pretty much the only way I would drink it from about my teens to early forties. When I started being more of a health addict I replaced the evil sugar with Splenda and then a few years ago transitioned to just the cream which is actually a flavored non-dairy product most of the time.

Very few times in my life did I try it with just the sugar and only once or twice plain black; only when I had no choice and needed the caffeine kick.

While I've had to endure the indignity of powdered creamer more times then I care to remember the liquid form is really the only way to go.

Waiting for my coffee to brew now. That first sip is always the best sip...

in the 90's I went from 3 pots of coffee a day to three cookers of turkish coffee. because it was more caffeine -- it did things like this with cigarettes too--- short newport box because of the effects... it has been 15 and a half years since I smoked and two years ago december I put down the coffee the tea the chocolate -- and other caffeine sodas -- I had a horrible migraine for about 3 weeks it was not stopping just madness the lights were brighter much brighter causing lots of pain too... 3 or more weeks so it has been almost 2 years beyond the caffeine addiction.. I almost sleep normally now --- almost but better then 3 days awake 2 days asleep- yeah I get to bed and sleep and get up in the morning it is really really weird like this but it has been like this for about one and a half years till today---

I was at a party on saturday a baby shower --- there was coffee at the end... it was so tempting I got a decaf tea--- but didn't drink it because I knew that not all the caffeine is gone and that means a powerful headache the next day- so yeah I also have ended sugar --- but not by choice really /// with sugar I just get sick from sweets so that sucks -- I am diabetic the endocrinologist says very infrequent sugar is ok--- but even then I get sick from it ...

not that I miss that sweet stuff but yeah seeing everyone at the party have cake ice cream brownies and sending us home with candy OMG--- what the?

just two questions:
  1. ever considered a syringe for your daily dose of caffeine?
  2. are you by any chance american?

Oh yeah, I forgot ordering plain coffee is weird in some other countries.

I'm not anti-latte, but why would you order a 400 calorie drink for your daily caffeine when you could order a 60 calorie one?

I guess the American pallet likes bitterness a little more? That's why all the best beer makers in the country are obsessed with absurdly overhopped brews.

you got that wrong - i'm the straight espresso type - the bad word was instant

Yeah. Instant is awful! Ironically, the Coffee Bags-you brew them just like tea bags-isn't half bad.
The coffee I'm drinking right now is from a Mr. Coffee, so I'm betting the Coffee Snobs are sneering at me. But it's a good, decent cup of Joe, and that's good enough for me...

Instant doesn't need to be bad, it's all in the quality of the coffee and the execution. I have had instant I could not distinguish from brewed.
A Mr. Coffee is one of my coffee making tools and it rivals anything Starbucks could serve me.
in my book starbucks has a hard time to even qualify as coffee

Something I've not had for a long time is coffee with evaporated milk. Very sweet but delicious and could probably sneak some bourbon in it as well.
That reminds me of Vietnamese coffee. The coarse-grind coffee is put into a small metal filter over the cup, and hot water poured through. In the US it's often made with New Orleans-style coffee that has chicory mixed in, for historical reasons having to do with availability, etc. And it's always mixed with sweetened condensed milk.

Edit months later: "Coarse," not "course." :brickwall:

I bow to your superior snobbery. ;)

Curious though, what beans, specifically are you drinking that are better than what they use? Cause I am pretty sure they buy up most all of the good stuff. I know because I watched it disappear from shelves as they grew in size.

Or is it simply a matter of brew strength?
It's often said that Starbucks over-roasts their beans compared to other coffee producers, resulting in a characteristic burnt taste.

Some of the Starbucks I used to service in a previous job would occasionally offer free drinks. If I accepted I always choose one if the frappe thingies even though I knew it was just fat & sugar with very little actual coffee and would likely kill my daily calorie intake.

The one time I requested just a regular old coffee I couldn't even drink half of it as it was so bittter, burnt and stale. It was one of the worst and I've had some pretty sub-par coffee in my time. I can't believe people pay big bucks for their swill.

There are a few more than excelent coffee places scattered around close to me, their coffee is made by people who love coffee, love to talk about coffee and use high quality equipment and coffee, one of them makes a SUPER intense dark filter coffee which is called "Aftershock" as for what that shock is.. a caffeine rush of epic proportion, also it's not bitter, not burned, the taste is very balanced.. :D yes it is a tad more expensive than ordinary coffee but it IS worth it.. :mallory:

There is a reason that they are called "Char-bucks". Personally, I always thought the reason the coffee was so bitter was to get their customers to buy the more expensive drinks.
