Anybody else having problems with the TOS HD DVD's?

CaptainHawk1

Commodore
Got a Toshiba HD-A3 HD DVD player for Christmas and the Season 1 TOS HD DVD's. First, I kept getting a cryptic error message during the opening moments, title sequence or 5:16 into the episode that gives me a code and says it cannot read the disc. Apparently this code is common to HD DVD players because I found a ton of complaints from people online regarding the older versions of the player (and one complaint about this model). The solution seems to lie in a firmware update (most of the time). I did the firmware update and it no longer gives me the error message, but instead it just freezes and pixelates at 5:16 of Man Trap.

Is anybody else running into this issue? If anyone has any siggestions, please chime in, however I would appreciate it if no one would suggest the troubleshooting tips that a 5 year-old comes up with (that are in the manual) like: "Did you make sure the disc was clean?"

Thanks.

I don't have either but have you trid playing another disc from the set and seeing if that one freezes up?

You could have a bad disc. If so I think you can contact cbs for a replacement.

Most people have reported minor problems.

I had freezing problems on Disc 4 & 6.

The one one disc 6 could be fixed by simply backing to the previous chapter. The episode would then play through.

The one one disc 4 was more serious and I had to skip to the next chapter and back up to nearly the freeze poimt.

I rented the above mentioned discs and the disc 4 problem was not there and the disc 6 problem was worse.

Amazingly, by switching from the TrueHD soundtrack to the DD Plus ELIMINATED the problem for the disc 6 episode 'Squire..'

But, even better, the 2.7 firmware update fixed the problem altogether!

So get ahold of those firmware updates and they will solve many playback problems!!

My main complaint is with the sound mix on the DVDs; Shat's voiceover in the opening credits sounds like it's being played down the hall, while the music sounds like someone has the speaker resting against my jawbone! When the episodes were broadcast, I recorded them on tape and the sound mix is completely different.

I wonder what we'll get in the 2nd season - they mixed the vocalist much too high in the broadcast episodes, and I hope they correct this on the discs - along with the voiceover, obviously.

I agree with you 100% on this one, Ptrope. I thought it might be my system. I guess it isn't.

The sound in the episodes is fine. The problem only is during the re-recorded and remixed opening credits.

I hadn't really noticed since I skip the credits nearly every time I watch this set.

They now have adjusted the chapters so that 'Chapter 2' always begins right after the credits. Very helpful and logical.

An outside question from one (me who hasn't purchased the set (hopefully when the 'exclusive' Paramount/CBS HDDVD only contract deal is up, I'll see a Blu-Ray set :)); but are the episodes in 1066 TV aired order; or in Production order on the discs?

I have the UK set and it is really pissing me off. I hate the damn combo discs. I honestly don't think these discs will last the year, its so easy to mark them.

What REALLY pisses me off is that the UK set has to have dutch and italian languages on them which means we are left with the TrueHD soundtrack which is SO QUIET. I can hardly hear it and have to boost my volume levels to make the damn thing out. >:<

This has been a complaint of mine since the DVDs first cmae out in two-episodes per volume form. The sound mix was altered from the original. For this reason, I have the series on laserdisc. Some sound effects are now ruined and let's not, once again, get me started on the music screw ups...

Air date order, as is always the case with Paramount.

Well, not if you include the 40 volume release which had them in production order. Or the VHS releases, but that's just being persnickety. ;-)

The contract will probably be up sooner rather than later now. With WB going Blu exclusive on friday HD DVD is pretty much dead. Universal will probably go neutral (if not Blu exclusive) in the coming week (that is the rumor at least) and Paramount is apparently desperately seeking to get out of their contract. Neither studio has spoken publically about what happened Friday and Toshiba canceled their HD DVD press event today.

Target just went Blu exclusive (or so says Philips at their CES conference) and Walmart is rumored to be going there in the coming days.

Anyone thinking about getting the set should either wait until the discs get sold in the upcoming fire sale (I would not recommend getting an HD DVD player now) or wait till the Blu-Ray release.

Also the set apparently sold very poorly. Something in the range of 10k total.

The sound in the episodes is fine. The problem only is during the re-recorded and remixed opening credits.

The reason for remixing Shatner's monologue was the fact that it couldn't be cleaned up enough to sound good with the new music, so they used a bit of reverb to hide it.

I'm not even going to mention the opening music.

Oh, I know about remastering Shatner's dialogue - I just don't get why they seem to have changed the levels so drastically between the broadcast and DVD versions. The voiceover is often barely audible, with too much reverb, on the discs, but it sounds perfectly fine, mixed in the foreground, in the broadcasts of the remastered episodes. It just doesn't make sense to me that they would make such a major and unnecessary change in the audio mix for the discs - if they were doing it to accommodate a surround system only, they did a pretty poor job of it.

Either that, or it's a very un-clever way of making us prefer the HD versions - though since I don't have an HD player of any sort, I don't know if the mix is an issue there, as well. Frankly, I've long since given up thinking that Paramount, and now CBS, aren't cynically devoted to extracting as much $$$ out of Trek fans simply because they think we'll spend it unquestioningly on our 'obsession.'

You obviously missed this article on Trek Movie today where Paramount announced their intention to go ahead with seasons 2 & 3 on HD-DVD, announcing sales of season 1 approaching 100,000 units.

Obviously we'll all see what happens with this latest news but this "dancing on grave" that is rampant all over the Internet right now should really be tempered down.

Since you just got this player I would suggest logging onto Toshiba's website and seeing if there are any updates for your player. I would suggest doing that even if you are not having these problems. You can download the updates and write them to a CDROM (At a low spead, learned from experience) and upate your player. I have the HD-20 and have had no problems with the disc but then again I have done the updates. Good Luck!

Or at Trektoday, our own news, where I posted this ahead of The Trek Movie Report. ;)

If that got me a hottie like Superman, I could live with being Lois Lane. :p
