Any Thoughts on Alien Spotlight: Vulcans?

I thought I'd go pick up Serenity: Better Days #1 at the comic shop tomorrow, so I thought I might splurge and pick up a Trek comic, too. I've already got the first two of Year Four, and I'm not at all happy with the writing. I'm mainly a TOS fan, so not too much interest in the TNG series', but the Alien Spotlight ones did catch my eye, the Vulcan one in particular. I like that it's set in the Pike era, since that's still a relatively quiet period on the chronology, and I've always liked Pike anyway.
So, basically, I wanted to hear if anyone had read it and what they thought. I'm still not completely jazzed about the idea of spending four dollars for a 20-page comicbook, so I'd feel better about if someone told me it was freakin' awesome.

I didn't like the characterisation of Tyler, or much of the artwork (a bit garish and caricatured) but otherwise, it was pretty good. The guest aliens, and situation they put the Enterprise crew in, were really interesting. And it's always nice to have a Pike story.

But, if you want to pick and choose issues from the series I wouldn’t put this at the top of the list. The Borg issue about the best IDW have done so far, and the Orion, Andorian and Romulans issues are all really good issues too. (The whole series is really good, but those four are the best I'd say)

If you don't like the first two issues of Year Four, you probably won't like the next four, either, since it's the same writer. Hang off until D.C. Fontana's series debuts shortly. :)

As for Alien Spotlight, that's got four TOS issues, and I think you'd enjoy the Orions or Romulans issue more than the Vulcans one (still haven't tracked down the Gorn one). The Orions issue is also a Pike story, albeit after his promotion to fleet captain, and the Romulans issue is a prequel to "Balance of Terror" from the Romulan perspective. The Gorn one is a Terrell/Chekov story on the Reliant.

Go for Pike! Alien Spotlight Vulcan is early Pike. Alien Spotlight Orions is late Pike. Oh, to be spoiled for Pike choices!!!

Don't feel you need to chose. Why, you could buy both Pike comics, and still be able to buy any other Pike-heavy stories that might yet be forthcoming.

Should there be any, that is.

I bought it. I say save your money. It's not a bad story, but there's nothing really special about it either. There is no new insight gained about Spock or the Vulcans that you probably havent read or seen before.

The best part about the book was that it was based during Pike's time on the ENT. However, it just made me nostalgic for the ST: Early Voyages comics.

As for the other Spotlights:
-Liked the Andorian one, my second favorite of the bunch
-Wish they had done more with the Gorn one, though it was cool using Terrell and Chekov
-The Orion one was all right, but I think it would've been better to use another captain besides Pike, like Archer or Robert April perhaps
-The Borg one was probably my favorite of the bunch
-Haven't read the Romulan one
