I wonder if smell-o-vision would cause more incidents of vomiting. :rommie:

There was a brief, ill-advised experiment years ago with scented paperback books. Floral scents for romance novels and saddle-leather (or something) for westerns.

It did not go over well with the truckers who had to ship the books to the stores, especially after the books had been sitting in a hot warehouse all weekend . . .

I've never heard of this. Sounds hilarious.

Just heard on the radio that over Memorial Day weekend, only 40% of moviegoers saw the films available in 3D... in 3D.

That's so unspecific as to be meaningless.

Okay....

Three dimensional movies this weekend (Thor, etc.) had 60% of their ticket sales from 2D showings.

So that's still 40% of more expensive tickets sold, right? And that in the days of financial crisis. Amazing.

And isn't it just wonderful that people actually have the ability to choose? If you want to watch in 2D, watch in 2D. If you want to watch in 3D, watch in 3D. Too bad they don't show movies in black and white anymore. I'm colorblind, I have no use for it, and surely, the ticket for a black and white movie would be a lot cheaper. I am also deaf on one ear, so I don't need the expensive surround sound systems. Can't they just show movies in mono sound, and again for a cheaper ticket? Well, at least they actually let me chose between 2D and 3D.

What bothers me the most about 3D is that I can't sneak into movies anymore, because they don't hand me the glasses. It used to be so much fun to watch movies without paying for them.

I heard about it from Tom Doherty, who has a great spiel on the subject. I'm not doing it justice.

If there was a truly kind and forgiving god running the universe, then yes 3D would go away. Unfortunately, I think we're screwed.

It's already fading, despite what you're seeing in the press. Really what's actually killing it is the rediculous prices for 3D TV setups coming right off the heels of making everyone upgrade to HD TV.

This isn't new, though. 3D gimmicks seem to show up en masse usually right after a big period of blockbusters as a way to keep the 'draw' going. A few of these movies may be good, but ultimately worse and worse movies use 3D to try to artifically raise their 'quality' and most people start dismissing the whole thing as the gimmick that it is.

Remember, we were told that 3D was the 'inevitable wave of the future' in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and now in the 2010s... It'll take over just about when Betamax, Laserdiscs, and DIVX dominate the industry.

Wait, DivX failed?

I am so criminally behind the times, it seems.

No.

How many screens? How many shows?

How does the box office take stand in comparison to the ticket sales?

I think it was Entertainment Weekly that said it best...3D should be treated like fine silver and only be brought out on special occassions. Garbage like The Green Hornet should not be in 3D.

I don't mind watching 3D movies if the film was shot in 3D. Converting it over from 2D just doesn't work. I do mind the extra cost though and the theater I go too doesn't play those 3D films in 2D.

I hate the fact that the final HP movie is in 3D. The film doesn't need to be gimmicked and I do not want to waste money a crappy 3D transfer.

I bet Avatar 3 will just be jacked right into our brains, no theater required. :p

Re: Any REALISTIC hope that 3D MOVIES may soon LOSE popularity or die

I see this week we're getting Lord of the Dance 3D.

Do we really need to see Michael Flatley's ego in 3D? To say nothing of the crotch?

No.

But, on the plus side, Piranha 3DD recently finished shooting. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing if they can top the severed-penis gag in the first film. Now, that was good use of 3D. :techman:
