Any new "new ship/crew" books on the schedule?

I'm with the people who say less is more...Dax and the Aventine aren't anything special (Voyager has a Slipstream Drive and is in the DQ, Picard has the AQ, Riker the BQ, DS9 the GQ) Dax has a niche as a supporting player in other peoples' stories and I think she suits it!

So let's see, Voyager's at Dairy Queen. Riker has barbeque sauce all over his beard. DS9 is in the Gentleman's Quarterly and Picard has a Q. Mmn. Sounds good.

Couple of thoughts...

1) With Dax being an established screen-character, Bowers being an established lit-character, as well as other details here and there, having the Aventine just pop in occasionally doesn't seem totally logical (to my admittedly fan-ish brain). So one possible solution - something happens in the Gamma Q that may require a fast Federation response = Aventine gets assigned to DS9? Doesn't replace the Defiant, but can handle some things the Defiant would be stretched to cover.

2) On the Enterprise stuff...sure, there's plenty of room for some "in between" stories, but...meh? I mean, not that great stories couldn't be told, but the close timeframe lends itself to "planet of the week" or "reset button" stories. Also, this is probably the reason I'm not an author. :)

I'd like to see some sort of Star Trek: Diplomatic Corps to match Corps of Engineers. The protagonist would be a Federation ambassador and his support staff, being hauled around by a Starfleet crew. Perhaps not quite as serial as SCE since I suppose an ambassador is more likely to have a longterm commitment than go on brief missions, so maybe a multibook miniseries focussing on a politically tense region or situation. Plenty of real world events to mine for relevance. Could also follow on from elements of Articles.

Maybe an anthology exploring the diplomatic fallouts of TNG/TOS? The ambassadors that showed up after the Enterprise had boldly buggered off?

Then again, we had A Singular Destiny - with Sonek acting as something of an Ambassador-At-Large?

See I think making Picard an Ambassador would be pointless - he already does it all already as a Captain...

Though married and with a kid I can see him looking for a "safer" billet I guess...

Which, a bit off topic, I still think will be one of the main themes of David Mack's new trilogy: Picard leaving the Enterprise, either becoming an admiral or ambassador, so his child won't be at danger on Enterprise.

I'm so not current on the AQ stuff, haven't even read Destiny yet :(.

I'm in the same boat as you, Sho. Sadly I'd already spoiled myself on a lot of stuff before I decided to finally start trying to get caught up. :ouch:

Basically, after I read about 40 or so Trek novels from all the shows as a kid I quit TrekLit for quite a while (not really intentionally, just drifting interests) until I heard about the DS9 Relaunch around the time Mission Gamma was coming out, which made me come back. I read all of those (starting with Avatar of course), then all of SCE, a few Lost Era volumes and then a random smattering of others like Immortal Coil, Death of Princes, Dyson Sphere and Articles throughout 2011. The most recent Next Gen I've read is Diplomatic Implausibility so I could check out Gorkon. So yeah, huge TNG & Titan gap for me, plus zero post-finale Voyager. And now that I plan to read Vanguard next it will be a while longer, too ... frustrating. I need two heads for parallel reading!

Haha well if your av's anything to go by, you're halfway there =p

Destiny was a good "jumping on point" as it were in the Novelverse (which is probably why the Novel-Timeline seems to be called the "Destinyverse!") And it's possible that Mack's new trilogy may be of a similar calibre? Most of his books, even those in serials, seem to be quite good for reading on their own I find...

Sorry, my post was poorly worded - 2011 was just the "random smattering". About half a dozen TrekLit novels of about 20 total. The rest I read in preceding years. So not all that fast after all, sadly ... I expect to make it through Vanguard this year and read the second DTI novel (read the first one already, so I had at least one fresh Trek outing last year), but it's not looking good for progress on the AQ continuity ... unless I go Trek-exclusive on the reading schedule, which might be worth it to enjoy the forum more :).

Anyhow - I think I hijacked the thread, sorry :(.

Oh I didn't mean anything like that! You said you needed two heads and I was pointing out your avatar has the two bodies thing going!

A poor joke, I apologise! Normal service will resume now!

Ah, I read av as average :).

Avatar is stolen from here btw., great campaign (and the left side captures engineering, which is my profession, albeit the software variety).

Picard's a father now? Darn, I need to catch up ...

I'm sorry! It's just, the novels in which these events took place were published a while ago, I never realised it might be prudent to put on some spoiler tags. Again, I'm really am sorry. :(

No problem at all - I agree these are long past the age where spoiler tags would be appropriate, and they're ugly and interrupt the reading flow anyway! :)

Those are some freaky ads.

Absolutely. I love how they embrace/celebrate the idea of fandom by showing people from different walks of life united by their love for the TNG universe. Great craftsmanship and an eye for memorable details too, like the heterochromia going on with the Data one. Plus, who thought we'd ever see TNG billboards on the street again? Very satisfying. :D
