Any chance that California will break off into the ocean?

This concept has been around for awhile now and it factors into the movie 2012 but is there any real truth in the idea? What would happen if it did happen? Would California become a island or would it sink into the ocean?

Jason

Whenever I hear this I always think back to the Superman movie where Lex planned to detonate nukes in the fault lines and make a huge chunk of California break off. He was going to make money because he bought up the land on the other side of the fault line that would soon become beachfront property.

Genius.

I'm afraid that was nothing more than a prediction by a man called Edgar Casey and is unlikely to happen.

I'm not a geologist, but...

California wouldn't "Break off", the plates would slip and a giant, deep cassum would form, and ocean water would rush in to flood it. The area on the left that has been pushed off the land, would probably fall in like a sink hole, and into the ocean, indeed creating new beach front property.

Underground tunnels, electric lines, plumbing systems, would probably all be devistated, and gas explosions woudl lead to large uncontrollable fiures. Basically California would probably burn to the ground in the biggest fire knwo to man, loosing damn near all films and music masters, and countless "talent". The whole state would be devistated.

The tsunami created by the entire movement of the left side, and parts of California falling into the ocean, would probably completely wipe out Hawaii, and countless other island, maybe even travel across the Pacific and cause great damage to Japan. Probably bury parts of Sachalin.

Geologically speaking, it's equally like that the rest of North America is going to break off from California and sink into the ocean.

So, no.

I think if you invest in land bordering the fault line your VERY distant descendants might enjoy having beachfront property, assuming the oceans don't evaporate due to global warming by then. Meanwhile you might have to deal with a few feet offset in your driveway after your house collapses in the "big one". That is one situation where a manufactured home (formerly known as a trailer) might be an advantage, since a structure designed to be towed down the highway could probably withstand a pretty substantial quake.

Any chance that Texas could break off into the ocean?

I'm not asking if it's technically likely to happen on its own, I'm asking if someone can arrange it for me. ;)

Given that California is a lot thicker than the ocean offshore of it is deep, that'd be a "no."

Whether there's some theoretical possibility that it could essentially become an island with a river separating it from the rest of the continent...?
