Any book canon in new show?

I am a big fan of the relationship between Picard and Crusher in the novels and the direction their relationship has taken, including little Rene. Any thoughts on whether this will be brought to the new show at all?

I suspect not, but it would be a shame - there is some beautiful stuff there. The scene in whatever book it was where Picard breaks down remembering his family from The Inner Light was one of the most moving I've ever read in Trek novels.

The straight answer is nobody knows - there are not even scripts for the show yet.

However... my own take is that it’s unlikely the writers room is going to be told to read 15 years of tie-in novels and told to make their show fit...

Picard & Crusher married, with Worf as XO - this is the Enterpriose after all, so it'a not like most of the senior staff move around a lot

No one has said the Enterprise is involved in the new show, or that Picard is still going to be a Starfleet captain. To the contrary, they've said that it's going to be about a "new chapter" in Picard's life, which doesn't imply more of the same.

If this is mainly a Picard centric show with little involvement from the other cast members then the major thing from the novels would be his marriage to Dr Crusher and his son Rene. Like Rapido I'd love them to include that in the new show. It could even lead to some stories by him having a wife and son (assuming McFadden would like to be part of the show). Of course they could conceivably be divorced by that time as well, or she may be on assignment while he is elsewhere. A lot of ifs.

As far as other novelverse things go, I guess that all depends. I think there are ways for them to have it both ways, to respect the novel continuity while not making it a required prerequisite to enjoy and understand the show.

History may not be with us here though. On screen canon in the past hasn't really given a rat's behind about what the books do. I think a lot of the angst here among us novel readers in this case is that this isn't just a one off book or two that could be completely undone, but over a decade's worth of books and characters that can just be...poof, gone.

I think Beyer being in the thick of it may help some of that. I don't think it will be necessary for the show writers to read 15 years of novels. They could probably be given a few guidelines if they wanted to keep it consistent, and aren't show writers given guidelines anyway, like a series bible. Plus with Discovery we've seen them attempt to keep everything consistent from a story standpoint. It's possible they decide to do that with the new TNG show and maybe give future novelwriters some guidelines about the new show to bring future novels in line to lead up to the show. Time will tell.

BTW, there is a thread on this subject under Trek Literature below if you want to see more comments about it:

True, but isn't this about what book cannon we'd like to see in the new show?

My vote is for none of it. I'm looking forward to having no idea what has happened to Picard and the Universe.

This.

I want the show to be Jean-Luc Picard: Borg Hunter. The last survivor of humanity hunts for the ultimate weapon to destroy the Borg.

Total head-ache. I'm sure I'll never be able to watch any if them anyway.
But total headache in that how can anyone speculate in something that so far nothing has been done yet?
:brickwall:

Naah. Books are part of a more esoteric, fastidious fanbase EU, which may contain aspects of interest but how many people will have kept up with all of them? Trek has been predominately a visual medium, especially after home video first took off and the printed novels all became less valuable than firewood. Even then, after x number of years, minute details simply won't be remembered for such staunch continuity anyway.

Case in point: Look at "The Last Jedi", which took that force projection thing from some novel or cartoon or whatever and put it into a movie and people - unaware of the concept's origins - all had big tantrums until hapless Rian had to spell it out. And we all know the same folks would stick it to Rian either way, for one of two reasons (either it stretches credibility, or people hating anything new will use any little detail and embellish it to encompass the whole movie - which is rather unfair...)

Having said that, replace "I Borg" and everything that followed with the giant novel "Vendetta" and you've got a winner...
