Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery. For Rapp, who originated the role of Mark in the Tony-winning Broadway musical Rent, the role comes after a recent turn on Cinemax's The Knick. The actor, who also played Mark on the big screen, is repped by Paradigm and Untitled Entertainment

The EW article has Yeoh's role as Captain Georgiou. The name hasn't changed from Han Bo, has it?

I love that he's an astromycologist and his name is Lt. Stamets. Definitely a hat tip to the american mycologist Paul Stamets. Really looking forward to some mushroom science episodes. So cool!

Not sure the "Han Bo" thing was ever anything more than an unconfirmed "report' or "rumor."

This is the first and only official announcement concerning the casting.

Hmm, it is interesting that he's a fungus expert of all things. I wonder if there's something significant behind that, or if just means we'll be getting some scenes of him getting all excited over fungi.
I noticed that the HR article called Discovery a remake, I'm assuming this was just a mistake or a clueless reporter not knowing what they were talking about.

My money is on clueless reporter. :)

Or maybe just sloppy terminology. People sometimes throw around terms like "remake" and "reboot" and "revival" interchangeably.

It's a dedication to the original fun-gi.

I doubt that fungus is going to play a major role in the series. I suspect his specialty will come in handy to the plot a few times, will be played for humor several times, will be a small part of building his backstory and establishing his character traits (like having fungi growing in his quarters) and then most of the time he'll be doing other things as a science officer.

Fantastic!

I love Anthony in Rent, it is my favourite musical (until I see Jim Steinman's Bat Out of Hell that is...)
