Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

SO much better than watching "Curious George" again. (My son's currently obsessed with it. Driving me nuts.)

My daughter went through a period where we read one of the Curious George books every night. That man with the yellow hat just keeps asking for trouble by asking a monkey not to get into trouble.

And no episode discussion today for me--we were scheduled to watch "Tsunkatse" but after getting her to bed both of us were just too tired. I've seen it before, and I was hoping my daughter would want to watch it because it's a Seven episode, but she wanted to play with trains instead, so that's what we did.

I'm more disturbed that the man with the yellow hat doesn't have a name (although a friend just told me his name was revealed in the movie to be Ted) and that he's so stuck on his monochromatic wardrobe. A grown man with a monkey for a mate is certainly creepy, though.

Totally understand that you must play trains with your daughter whenever she asks, especially since she's got a baby sister coming soon. Soon enough when she wants to play you'll be busy with the baby. Mine are 17 months apart, so it was a tough transition for my son when his sister was born. It gets better fairly quickly, though! :)

I loved "Tsunkatse." Look forward to hearing your thoughts when you get around to it.

I kinda suspect what Shatnertage's review might be like :guffaw: I half-suspected his CG/tiredness might have been an excuse to get out of it. But I shall keep an open mind...:)

Time permitting, I'll share my thoughts on "Tsunkatse" later today--the Gaming Control Board released the February Nevada gaming numbers, which means a lot of work for me--in a good way.

Until then, I've got one question:

"Light heavyweight?"

"Father Fox's Pennyrhymes" was always my personal favorite.:)

.....just thrown that out there, you know. ;)

Just checked this out on amazon - what a sweet book! I think I'll order it for the wee ones. Thanks! :)
It warmed my heart finding out it's considered a collectable now. It really is a great book. I hope your wee ones come to love it as much as I have. :)

Thanks, exodus! :)

^ I might check that book out, too.

But for now, I'm sharing life lessons in the form of watching Seven get her ass kicked in...

"Tsunkatse"

We start with two guys fighting. One of them is a spindly forehead alien. The other is a Hirogen. I wonder which way this will go.

And Chakotay and Torres are in the audience, liking it.

When we get back, Janeway's going on vacation, leaving Chakotay in charge. That would have made a great mini-arc. Everyone wants to play on Norcadia, but Seven and Tuvok have a fascinating gaseous anomaly to study. I love it. And I really loved their discussion about non-awkward silences. Without saying a word, they say a lot more than many other characters.

But then they get kidnapped, and Seven's forced to fight...against the Rock! This doesn't go that well for her. But the Hirogen's ready to play sensei and get her ready for her big match...in a day.

I find it very hard to believe that anyone would master a new form of combat in a day, but we'll let that go because I've got a more serious philosophical problem with Tuvok. He seems way, way too pragmatic for a Vulcan here, basically telling her it's logical to kill others if it means she'll live another day. I guess that's a form of logic, but it doesn't seem to square with what we know about Vulcans--namely that (in the 24th century at least)--they're pacifists. I know it's not canon, but I just read Spock's World, which talks about this aspect of Vulcan culture in great detail. I can't see a follower of Surak using logic to justify killing. Some sort of passive resistance seems more the Vulcan way to me.

There's an amusing moment that I alluded to earlier--when Chakotay's recounting his days as a light-heavyweight champion. Based on his frame, he'd have to have been much, much leaner to have gotten under 175 pounds--but I guess cutting weight might be easier in the 24th century. And he poo-poos Kim's talk about how tough Parresis Squares players are. Funny.

We also get to see every forehead alien you could imagine in the audience, which is fun.

And my wife raised a great question: if the crowd is watching holo-projections fight, how can the Rock throw his opponent into the audience?

There was just an extra dose of awesomeness here with Jeffery Combs as the promoter, or whatever he was. He was considerably more restrained than Shran, which was unfortunate. He could have served up some great ham when Voyager blew up his satellite dish, but didn't. And the Hirogen guy was good, too--I know he was on DS9, but I haven't seen a ton of that yet. The Hirogen were a really cool species--I wish we'd seen more of them. Could have done with more Hirogen and less of Neelix's skin condition in this one, that's for sure.

So basically I had fun watching this one, even though I was a bit iffy about Tuvok's use of logic. I loved the last scene when he counsels Seven--for a guy with controlled emotions, he projects some gratitude and awkwardness at the same time.

Ooooh! Oooooh! Yes! Everyone should read that book! And then go watch ENT "The Forge".

Yes!

Really, all I have to say about this is:

This episode surprised the hell out of me when it first aired. Based on the previews, I was convinced it would be total garbage (and I like The Rock :))

I still find it pleasantly interesting. I'm sure UPN told them to make some sort of stupid "wrestling" tie-in episode with The Rock and the poor writers spent a few days crying their eyes out. But they pulled it off, so good on them. And LOL at the Chakotay comment.

I'm a tad surprised they let Janeway go on vacation alone with their best shuttle. Tom Paris must have taken that poorly. :)

EDIT: LOL, omg, shatnertage, your location has me in stitches :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

*Consults Memory Alpha*

It would appear that The Rock was sincerely interested in becoming an actor, and this was one of his early roles.

I'm a tad surprised they let Janeway go on vacation alone with their best shuttle.

"Yeah, who is she to run off by herself with our best shuttle?"
"She's the captain."

The Sad Ensign was with Janeway in the shuttle, too. Ashmore, I think?

And that leads me to...

"Collective"

So four officers are sitting around in the Delta Flyer playing poker when they get attacked a by a Borg cube? Hysterical. Someone should have gotten demoted for that--they all could have been assimilated if that was a full-strength cube. I heard the Beltran was phoning it in at this point, but it looks like his character is, too.

And it's a ship with a small number of Borg kids. Who will eventually get adopted by Seven. Who's now disavowed any maternal role with NaomiWildman.

Thank you, Voyager staff, for the image of the Borg Baby floating in amniotic fluid, shivering in pain. It's something that will probably haunt my nightmares for years to come.

At least now I know what everyone's talking about when they complain about the Borg Baby disappearing. So is that it? We really never see it again.

Although I loved the shocked look on the Doctor's face when, after he manipulated Janeway into holding the baby, she still wanted to use the virus.

On the whole this was kind of a blah episode for me. There was some action, but it wasn't that exciting. And Kim can't set foot on a Borg cube without something awful happening to him. No wonder he said no to Seven. I actually liked "Tsunkatse" a lot better, since it had a few really strong performances and the Seven/Tuvok friendship.

And I'm not totally thrilled about the prospect of all those Borg kids. But maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I love the part with the Borg Baby. :( So sad that Janeway isn't canonically going to ge that chance.

Which leads me to: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BORG BABY?!?!

Yes, Ashmore was in the shuttle with Janeway. See? I told you that you'd start seeing him everywhere!

Yep, that's the last you'll ever see of the Borg baby. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the way the kids are used, though. I never really found them annoying at all.

Hmmm, I see "Spirit Folk" is up next. Be sure to look out for a guest star you might recognize from other Treks!

I think getting to know Icheb and how his character plays out in the show made me appreaciate this ep. more in retrospect. Don't love it but like I said, I can appreciate it more.;)

BTW, is it wrong of me to be happy when the bratty Borg kid died at the end?:alienblush::lol:

^ No, I was happy when he died, too. He was a total ass.

I believe the writers' confuddlement with the Borg Baby is mentioned on the DVD extras somewhere, by the way.
