Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

And I knew that the name of the species sounded familiar. It's the Qomar, and there's also a Komar species. Were they running out of names?

I actually think that it's happened before on TNG. Some species from The Big Goodbye that you never see but are named.

I'll go find them and see who they were matched with.

I really enjoyed this episode. Although I do wonder, when the Doctor gets to sing, if the rest of the cast is secretly (or not so secretly!) going, "Aw come on! Not Voyager: The Musical again!"

Once again this episode brought up the Doctor's sentience, and his being a well-rounded being with aspirations and desires that don't always mesh with what is expected of him. Another interesting scene between him and Janeway, when discussing his desire to stay on the planet. I was torn between thinking he was selfish for wanting to leave, knowing there was no true replacement, and feeling he was in his rights as a sentient being to follow his dreams/desires. I'm not sure I agree with Janeway's decision to let him go.

Or...I'm over-thinking it and should have just listened to the pretty music?

Glad not just me Just finished s5 of TNG and there's an engineer called Sutter, which made me go: wasn't there a Sutter (Suter?) on VOY? Same character? No, I don't think so. Just lazy name casting

As for Virtuoso, shamed to say can't remember it There are a couple of latter episodes in seasons 6 & 7 I just found "oh, it's the Doc and 7 show again". But I do like Flesh & Blood, which is my fave of them.

Once again this episode brought up the Doctor's sentience, and his being a well-rounded being with aspirations and desires that don't always mesh with what is expected of him. I'm not sure I agree with Janeway's decision to let him go.

It would have been cruel of her to forcefully keep him on board if she really recognized his sentience. Voyager isn't a slave ship. Crewmembers were allowed to leave in "The 37s" (I refuse to put the apostrophe in there ), "Homestead," "The Gift," and "Ashes to Ashes." It would have been awful for her to force anyone to come along, particularly given how she felt about the events of "Caretaker."

I like this episode as well. The scene where Janeway and Seven talk about "fans" totally breaks the fourth wall and makes me uncomfortable every time.

Well, you can see the similarity, esp if didn't know the spelling Oh, and should have said Body & Soul, not Flesh & Blood *doh* See, that's another problem where episode titles all begin to sound the same

And now it's like the writers were working off of the checklist of everything I don't like in Trek.

You've got a war zone, crewmembers' memories altered, lots of mental trauma, and a big mystery that actually isn't so mysterious. Also, there's a big preachy idea about the importance of remembering bad things. The only thing that would have made this worse would have been a holodeck malfunction, a Mark Twain impersonator, and Data reciting the thesaurus.

In general, this was a plodding, grim episode that just made me grit my teeth. It wasn't poorly made, it was just tedious. It reminded me a lot of "Nemesis" and probably a lot of other episodes that I've shut out of my mind.

The scene when they're in the conference room, where everyone's sharing the story of what happened, was just so awful--I don't know how they all kept straight faces. In the background, Chakotay was grimacing, and I said, "Look at Beltran ACTING!!!" Then he started shouting and everything, and Janeway responded with this totally blank stare that could have been expressing shock, pity, fear, or joy, and I said, "Beltran used up all the acting for that scene."

There was one really cool part, though. When they're reviewing the away team's snapshots, the second one with the goofy alien making the funny face made both of us laugh hysterically. I actually rewinded it and paused it on him. I don't believe they made someone sit through hours of makeup just for a totally extraneous shot! He must have been someone's landlord or something. They even lampshaded it by having Janeway say what a photogenic guy he was. Then she did a special handflip to get to the next slide.

All I can say is that, if I can find a still of that headshot, I've got my next avatar, tire track down the face and all.

I'm not even saying most of the performances weren't good. Ethan Phillips has a few really good scenes, particularly the one with Seven where he expresses remorse about what happened with NaomiWildman. It just felt very flat.

So even though I didn't like this episode much, I found something to enjoy.

This episode is one of my pet favorites. It's got everything I like - over-the-top angst, people flipping out, and neat CG. Plus I sort of like how they handled the problem at the end. I would assume it was a bit against the PD, but fixing the thing so it A) Transmitted in order instead of in weird fragments and B) Putting up a big "YO, WATCH OUT FOR THIS MEMORY IMPLANTER THINGIE" sign in the system was a good way to handle things. It kept the thing's intent intact and also gave everyone passing through a fair warning.

Also, I think the memorial obelisk is really neat. I'm a total sucker for them finding mysterious puzzles and artifacts and stuff. And the scene with Tom Paris' TV and beer was adorable.

EDIT: It was a bit heavy-handed in the episode, but think how much different our understanding of history would be if we lived it through someone's eyes rather than through text written after the fact? I'm not saying folks don't try their best to document things, but there's no substitute for walking in someone's shoes.

Memorial is one of those love it or hate it episodes.


It's also an episode I use for whenever my sister Adrienne and I get into an argument of whether or not Janeway loved Chakotay.

And, naw, Mair's right, it really is a love-it-or-hate it ep, I think. I remember telling hubby how much I liked it when we got to it on our re-watch and he wondered what the heck I was on after it was over. Sorry to hear there's a lot going on with ya.

Well, I wanted to give the new av a try--thanks, froot.

I thought she was looking at him flirtatiously when she asked if he bought anything from my buddy.

And it's nothing awful going on with me--just lots of busy stressful stuff. I just had to totally rewrite an article tonight because of a ruling that came down today from the county commission, and I've got another one I should be working on now, but I'm too tired to do that kind of writing.

Not too tired for TBBS, though. Yet.

I think it proves it. But I'm getting the early stages of "Baby Brain" so I need to go back and watch it to completely formulate how.

I remember it had something to do with Janeway's vision.

Oh, and other alien species that sound alike but are different: Jarada, Hirogen, Haradin.

Well, I'm meh on Memorial, so there goes y'all's love it or hate it theory. I pretty much grit my teeth at B'Elanna building Tom a TV complete with commercials. The whole PTSD and remembering stuff deal is an interesting concept. Sadly, the execution does not grab me. But on the plus side, Ashmore gets to talk!! Yes! My favorite background yellowshirt! Janeway puts an arm around him, expresses concern for his welfare, and he gets to say "Yes, ma'am!"

Also, Janeway's hair looked great in this episode, but I felt sorry for her having to stomp through the woods in her four inch heels.

And also again, Shat. Your avatar. I can't decide whether I want to make fun of that guy or hug him.

It reminded me od DS9's "Hard Time" but on a grander scale.
Also loved Neelix in the episode as well.
Having been a war survivor, his pleading to keep the momument running really brings it home. He truly understood the purpose of such a thing.
IMO I think it's sad when most of the Trek fandom sum up Voyager using "Threshold" or "Endgame" as examples but overlook great eps. like this, "Real Life" or "Counterpoint" as great examples of what Trek is.

However, we do agree on some things. This, for example. (Except for your inclusion of "Memorial", obviously.)

IMO I think it's sad when most of the Trek fandom sum up Voyager using "Threshold" or "Endgame" as examples but overlook great eps. like this, "Real Life" or "Counterpoint" as great examples of what Trek is.

I forgot about the TV. That was pretty cheesy, but I was glad it wasn't a '57 Chevy.

And I was wondering what that guy was called. My wife and I just called him "Sad Ensign." As in, "and then I played a Sad Ensign on Star Trek: Voyager." It was a gripping performance.
