Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

The drinking and fighting isn't that much of a departure, though, IMO. Not for Tom Paris, anyway. We saw that Alternate Universe!Paris was a cranky drunk in "Non Sequitur," for one thing. And he certainly had no qualms about spaghetti-wrastling with Neelix in the Mess Hall in "Parutrition." And of course Harry would play along if Tom started something.

Don't forget Chakotay punching what's-his-name!

Ok, there was a bit more fighting than I give Voyager credit for. J

And drunk Tom was the best thing in Non Sequitur.

EDIT: Agree with you about the plant. And Possum's fic. :D

I thought this was an incredibly poignant episode. Marika wanting to spend her last days on a starfleet vessel because that was once her life.. in another quadrant.. with a husband and child. So sad.

Also, the prehensile plant is one of the best guest stars the show ever had.

:bolian:

Although I look at the prehensile plant as a wonderful "matchmaker"... given WHO had to RESCUE her from that very close encounter.

I liked the "change of pace" feeling in this ep... it was like a visit to Raisa or that fantasy planet in TOS.

Just what the doctor ordered.

(Oh, and thanks for reminding me of Naomi's smile in the corridor. :) )

And I'm back with...

"The Barge of the Dead"

In another thread, I said I wasn't sure Roxann Dawson could carry an episode by herself. I take that back 1000% after seeing "The Barge of the Dead." It's a great episode, and it's all because of her acting.

Most of us aren't human/Klingon hybrids whose fathers were driven away by our mother's adherence to Klingon ritual, but Dawson was able to get to the emotional core of Torres and tap into something universal that, I think, anyone could identify with. I know I did.

A few things stand out. First, the scene with Tuvok is absolutely incredible. Pissed-off Tuvok--and this is the first time I've seen really pissed-off Tuvok--is a sight to see. That was great.

There's another Doctor/Seven duet. At this point, I'd be happy if they just made the rest of the series a musical.

Torres also had really good hair for this episode--a little curlier than usual, and it seemed to have more body. Maybe the humidity from whatever ocean the Barge of the Dead is crossing does that, I don't know.

The Barge scenes were well-realized, and the final tour through Voyager hell was good, too. This is definitely one of the better episodes I've seen for a while.

Up next is "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy," so it looks like I'll be getting some more of the Doctor singing, at least. I'm thinking that it's a light-hearted holodeck adventure, but that's just a guess.

Pissed off Tuvok was awesome. But Tuvok is also always awesome.

BotD stands out because it was the first huge backstory we got on B'Elanna, whom I love dearly, and because it was the last of Ron Moore's brilliant Klingon episodes(this was actually intended for DS9 and Word).

Also the scene between B'Elanna and Janeway at the end was beautiful. :) That was something I waited six years to see.

Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy is a great episode. :techman: And a personal favorite.

I looovvee BotD! I love Torres and it was just a wonderful episode for everybody. I think the acting was 150% in this episode.

I agree with the B'Elanna/Janeway scene... so touching and I love seeing the emotional connections between the crew and how much they all are really like a family. Beautifully done episode.

Easily one of my favorites, for sure. Tuvok swinging the bat'leth like a ninja Klingon master was pure gold, along with B'Elanna wandering around in Klingon ass-kicking garb. And the sets were awesome. Hell!Voyager was a great idea. And having B'Elanna make the very obvious connection between her mother and Janeway... cool. Just so cool.

Wonderful episode, through and through.

It's... interesting you should mention that you want the rest of Voyager to be a musical, since "Tinkor Tenor" is the next episode ;)

Although I am often irritated by Torres' Klingon angst, I actually think "Barge of the Dead" is a great episode. Maybe because it's action oriented, as compared to some other episodes in which Torres just kind of whines about her parents.

The inclusion of a Klingon drinking song doesn't hurt, either.

I REALLY can't pick a fav ep of the series... but if someone put a phaser to my head and forced me, it would be this one (which I suspect you could have guessed from my fanfic, "Counting in Time". ;))

Loved the T/Chak interaction, the T/P interaction, the T/Tuvok counseling-batleth session, and OF COURSE the T/J-intertwined with the T/Miral was out of this world.
"Permission denied".

:sigh:

"WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO BE?"

:bolian: :bolian: :bolian: :bolian:

Yes, I loved Be'Lanna's more Klingon looking do.
I wish they had kept it.

Although I've got to say that when Tuvok was whirling around the bat'leth with that serious look on his face, it almost looked like they were about to crack up. I know I would have gotten the giggles if someone had been looking so serious and swinging that thing around in my face.

But this was just such a good episode--the kind that really makes you think. And because it hit on that universal note--"What do you want me to be?" it's really effective.

Is your opinion of Roxann Dawson as an actress changing or does it remain the same?

Just curious.

It's definitely changed. I never thought she was awful, just more in the middle of the pack. But this was really impressive, and she really sold the episode in an emotional way that made it work. So my opinion's definitely improved.

There's one more, IMO, where she definitely shines above and beyond the rest of the cast. It won't be until the seventh season so my lips are sealed on the rest of it.

There's some extras on one of the DVD sets where they were doing the scene on the ship when B'Elanna throws the Bat'leth off into the water. While filming, everthing was quiet and everyone was yelling their lines, being all in to it and when the director said 'cut', the cast applauded, and clapped each other on the backs, saying "good job!" and giving support and praise. It was so sweet to watch.

I don't usually do "in-progress" reviews, but I just saw the opening scene from the tease for "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy."

It's the BEST THING I"VE EVER SEEN!!!!!!

When the Doctor sang that second verse, my wife and I just looked at each other like OMG! I had to play it back a second time to make sure I hadn't hallucinated it.

If I had a Voyager dream, that's pretty much what it would be.

TBBS is under attack! Only I can save it. Ready photonic thread bomb! What's that? Sorry, I daydreaming when I should have been talking about...

"Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy"

As I alluded to above, the opening is only the coolest thing I've ever seen. I can't say too much more about it, but the "improvised" version of La Donna e Mobile is the best thing I've seen on Trek since "Ode to Spot." I love that little hand gestures when the Doctor sings, "for seven years, about."

Onto the episode itself, it's a wonderful Walter Mitty fantasy, with a little dash of technobabble to make it into a Voyager story. The aliens hanging out in the nebula looked a lot like Sontarans, but has much more personality. I really like how we got to get into the head of the guy who was scanning Voyager. It's fantastic to see a little slice of life of the aliens who end up fighting with Voyager. And the poor guy really developed a fondness for the Doctor, too.

The episode's best points were the daydreams. Seven, Torres, and Janeway were particularly hilarious, fighting over each other to get to the Doctor. And I loved Paris' little wave when the Doctor mentioned him during his "break up" with Torres. Even Chakotay seemed to be having a good time.

There's just so many touches that make this a great episode--the computer saying, "warp core breach, a lot sooner than you think," the pips appearing on the Emergency Command Hologram, Seven's remark about the Doctor not expecting her to pose for him.

If I had my way, Trek would have a lot more of these episodes. It's not ambitious, but it's a lot of fun.

:D

Loved the whole thing. Especially the beginning. And especially his fantasies, even moreso the one in the briefing room where they're all after him.

This episode is my number four favorite.

One pill makes you bigger. One pill makes you small. And the ones the writers of this episode give don't do anything at all...

"Alice"

At first I thought this was going to be a holodeck episode, with different characters playing different...characters from "Alice in Wonderland." You could have angry Tuvok as the Mad Hatter, and for some reason I thought the Doctor would make a great Cheshire Cat. And naturally Janeway as the Queen of Hearts.

But no, instead we got a Turkey Platter episode. Great. And as soon as I find out that he's souping up a space hot rod, I correctly predict that he will name her "Alice." Yuck.

It wasn't an awful episode, but it wasn't a great one by any stretch of the imagination. Abbadon is played by the guy who played Silik on ENT, which is cool.

Some questionable creative choices here, though. The director really should have had the actress playing Alice turn down the crazy in the first part of the episode. She's so OTT we know that it can't end well, so there's just not much suspense.

In universe, there's something that's actually pretty awful. Janeway absolutely fails domestic violence awareness. Torres comes to her and opens up about Paris "practically assaulting" her--and he actually did come close to hitting her--and Janeway basically shrugs it off. Until Torres mentions that Chakotay and Kim have noticed Paris being strange too, and then she's all, "Well, if the men think it's unusual, we'll investigate." It just really shook me that she didn't trust Torres' own judgment there. And the "Oh, that doesn't sound like Tom" line sounds exactly like what someone would say about a domestic abuser. It's just very odd.

In the end of course, Paris is back, and he vows to remain simply friends with the Delta Flyer. Again, not great, but not awful.

Though there was one head-scratching moment early in the ep, when Chakotay said, "We've already got a full complement of shuttles." You've got to be kidding me. They've burned through at least a half-dozen that I can remember.
