Another spare parts bash

Not really. Since this is based on a Franz Joseph design, and FJ's tech manual assigned registry rnumbers not chronologically but rather by vessel type (i.e. scouts/destroyers are 6XX, heavy cruisers are 1XXX, dreadnoughts are 2XXX, and tugs are 3XXX), there's really no problem.

Um, is that a TOS purist system?

Define "TOS purist" in a way that doesn't make me think you're trying to be an insulting elitist.

I was just asking if that registry system was designed for TOS since I've seen 7XXXX used for Galaxy, Nebula and Intrepid Classes. Looking at them, they appear to be of different types.

Some Excelsiors don't have 2XXX for their registry numbers.

Great model as usual. My hat is off to you sir. I would include an emoticon to that effect, but we don't have one. It is due in on Tuesday.

Any chance your going to put out a calendar like you did a few years ago?

Hmm, I do have enough new bashes for one...
Let's see how energetic I feel in September.

Whoops, sorry, I'm oversensitive from "TOS purist" cracks over in the remastered discussions. :)

Half the NCCs I use on my bashes are carefully thought out to fit into the canon of the various TV shows; half my NCCs are carefully thought out to pay tribute to the ship's name if it refers to a historical date, person or event; and half are totally random picked out of a hat and hope nobody notices.

You noticed. :p

Great model forbin I've always loved TOS ships !!! Always liked the idea that starfleet had some beefy starships to make them Klingons shudder.!!! Nice work again forbin !!!

Maybe if you looked at a better drawing...

and some variants...

BTW, the nacelles on those designs are one segment longer than a standard Connie nacelle. They're on my "to do" list.

Oh, and don't forget the Refit versions...

^^ Yup, that's the one I was talking about, didn't know there was a class name for it.

There's a 3 nacelle version too? Yikes!

BTW, the direct links are being blocked.

C'mon Forbin , do it do it do it.

Ok, break it down - what part makes it ugly? I'm guessing it's the secondary hull.

Links work fine for me, but if you're having trouble...

Look for Julius Caesar, MacArthur and Napolean. On the menu on the left, click on 2275 to see the Refit versions.

I like how they decide a ship is a new class by bolting on two, then four extra deflector dishes to the saucer

That would certainly be the hard part to model. Probably a flat-out scratch build.

another option for the Heavy carrier would be Use a standard Heavy cruiser primary hull and attach the elongated secondary hull on to her.

FJ's system was only designed for his book, not for TOS, since TOS had been off the air for more than five years before the book's publication. Although some of the book's ship names, registry numbers and designs appeared in the first three Trek films, beyond that the book was no longer used as a reference.

As for the Excelsior, only Mike Okuda can explain the strange rationale for changing the Excelsior class's registry numbers from 2XXX to a whopping 4XXXX.

Yup.

I figured that. Don't worry, I'm not going to be mastering that secondary hull because it's too unique and specific...probably wouldn't sell enough to justify it, or it would take a long time to make the investment back.

I will be making that Command saucer and extended nacelles though, so save your pennies.

Nope, still ugly!

Yeah, because you've never built anything aesthetically suspect...

Which has got what to do with anything? Everyone may feel free to like or not like anything at all.

Yup.

I don't think it is ugly at all. The way you have reproportioned the nacelles and primary hull seem, to my eye, to give the design a nice sense of balance.

My problem with it is purely functional-- those ingress and egress paths to the flight decks run far too close to those nacelles for my tastes.

But it's damned fine work nonetheless and the fanboy in me says order a dozen for the upcoming Klingon/Romulan/Gorn/Tholian/Kzinti megawar!
