another question about star wars ep.III

Immolatus

Captain
Captain
I was just watching Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed and I was watching the part when Mace Windu and Sidious were dualing. Did Sidious lose the fight on purpose or did Mace really kick his a$$? I'm under the impression he really lost.

No, Sidious threw the duel in order to make it look like Mace was the aggressor, and in turn, convert Anakin to the Sith.

The novelization by Matt Stover (which I don't really like) implies that the scarred face is Palpatine's true face and there is a sequence just before the fight against Yoda in the Galactic Senate where Palp's muses that he has missed his face...I'm of the opinion though that he allowed himself to be scarred in order to push Anakin over the edge to the Dark Side and make it seem like Mace was killing him while in reality he was in control of the fight the entire time. Sidious could have killed Mace easily I think if he really wanted to, he'd just taken care of six of the best Jedi Masters earlier in the squence just before that after all.

Allowed? If he didn't want to be shot in the face then he should have stopped shooting himself in the face. Mace Windu was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.... Münchhausens. :)

It could really have worked either way I suppose. It sure seemed like Mace might have finished Palpatine off if Anakin hadn't stepped into the middle of the fight and lopped off his arm. Anakin was obviously quite worried about Mace killing Palpatine. However, Palpatine made a pretty dramatic recovery as soon as Mace was rendered defenseless and he was able to muster up a massive burst of lightening in a hurry despite his apparent weakness. Of course, Palpatine probably had just enough of a brief respite while Mace was disoriented with the sudden loss of his arm/lightsaber to enable him to regain his composure and quickly attack/kill Mace. I guess my contention would be that Palpatine was really on the ropes and either Mace and/or Anakin probably could've finished Palpatine off at that point. Of course, as well all know things worked out differently................... As I suspected when I first saw the movie, the state of the battle ended up working in Palpatine's favor in terms of convincing Anakin to join him and, particularly, reinforcing Anakin's growing doubts about the Jedi Order (and he and Mace have always been at odds with each other to boot). I've always kind of wondered if Mace took the right approach towards dealing with Palpatine after Grievous' destruction.
I doubt that Palpatine actually cared too much about his appearance. I'm not sure he meant to end up disfigured but he didn't really seem to care that much about it. In fact, in Luceno's "Dark Lord" novel, Bail Organa and Mon Mothma privately speculate that Palpatine would likely use his disfigurement to further isolate himself from the Senate. His disfigurement also certainly helped garner some degree of sympathy from the Senate immediately after the attack on the Jedi Temple when he announced the formation of his Empire/New Order and his declaration of the Jedi as traitors to the Republic.

Mace was kicking his ass. Palpatine just took advantage of Anakin bumbling in, as well as Mace's inherent Jediness, to regain the upperhand by basically playing possum. The fact that it helped drive Anakin over the edge was icing on the cake.

Nah. Mace was one of the greatest lightsaber duelists of all time. He kicked Palpatine's ass. Palpy just took advantage of his situation and used it to manipulate Anakin.

As far as the scaring, there's a lot of different opinions, sources, and explanations on that. Mostly because as taken at face value, it doesn't make a lick of sense as Luke didn't end up looking like that after he got fried. But that's Lucas for you.

My big question is, were Anakin's dreams pure chance, caused by the Force, caused by Palpatine, something else? Most people think they're a self-fulfilling prophecy, but being kind of sympathetic to Anakin, I think the bad visions might have happened in another way if he hadn't turned.

Palpatine must have been planting them otherwise how would he know to offer Anikan resurrection powers? i suppose he could have been reading Anikans naturally occurring reams, but that amounts tot he same game plan.

I dont think it was the lightning that did the scarring, but the amount of Dark Side Palps was drawing on that disfigured him. The novelisation says its because of a feedback loop, with Mace channeling the Dark Side back into Palpatine.
Sticking with the novels, heavy use of Dark Side energy leads to the kind of disfigurement Palps suffered - in the Dark Nest trilogy back when the Jedi were following the whole "no dark side" nonsense, Luke drew on the dark side to hide a ship and ended up with puffy eyes and greyed skin for a while, with several characters commenting on him looking like Palps.

well it went without saying that the dark Side did that to him in Jedi. Then some were curious about Yoda, whether the force warps your appearance if you use it to grossly extend your lifespan... Cause surely if all of Yoda's lot did live for 900 years, then they'd be everywhere if they didn't have a shite birthrate.

Wasn't the original Emperor from Empire just a little bit more tumoury?

Everyone we have seen from his race was also very old looking and also a Jedi.

Regardless, trying to give either rhyme or reason to anything Lucas puts on screen is pretty pointless. The vast majority of the stuff we see is there just because it looked cool to him. Everything beyond that is pure rationalization.

Palpatine had studied all of the lightsaber combat forms according to the novel.
