Announcement of Tennant's replacement?

Chris227

Lieutenant Commander
Any thoughts on when we'll hear about the new Doctor, or if he's been cast yet? Usually the cast announcements for new Doctors happen some time before the Doctor leaves-I think Colin Baker was announced in '83, and Tennant himself was announced in the middle of Eccleston's run on TV. So perhaps we'll know shortly.

Or will the announcement come at some point next year?

The new Doctor will begin filming next July (unless the scheduling for series five is different, which seems unlikely), so the announcement will almost certainly have to be made by then at the latest. I imagine the BBC will want to time the news for maximum publicity if they can, so I'd guess in the lead-up to either this year's Christmas special or next year's Easter special. I'm leaning toward the latter.

Yeah, same.

I don't think it'll be announced before the Christmas Special, because they'll want to milk the title - and the mystery surrounding David Morrisey's character - for all it's worth.

Oh, good point. Yeah, definitely after Christmas but before Easter.

Going by their planned schedule they'll be shooting the regeneration in mid-April, so I'd guess shortly before then to stop the tabloids leaking it first. Then an extra round of publicity just before S5 starts shooting when they announce the new companion.

That assumes that a) they show the regeneration, and b) that they shoot both halves of it April instead of saving the second half for later as has been done before.

They won't not show the regen, I'm sure of that. It is one of the most thrilling moments in Who.

I agree, they have to show the regeneration, I'm sure the makeup wizards could age Tennant up a little as well, a few grey hairs and wrinkles (Not Last of the Timelords old though!) I think Tennant's going to be one of those annoying people who ages very well like Davison.
