Anime is dying

I've no problem with animation. Plenty of animated movies I've enjoyed, animated shows I've enjoyed and can still enjoy.

Do I like pastel-colored ponies with overly magical and flowery language? No.

Do I like pretty much anything about anime? No. And I've tried watching it and getting into plenty of times since high-school and friends' requests and suggestion of others. It's just not for me.

Anime is vastly over-rated Japanese seizure-inducing crap.

Oh, what? There's a new series about some white Japanese teenagers who stumble upon magical forces in a near post-apocalyptic land? Well that DOES sound new and interesting!

And the female characters are going to giggle a lot and wear short skirts? So original!

No offense to those who like and enjoy anime but, for me, it's never done much for me and I've tried watching the better anime series and movies out there and I just can't stand it.

1. Only one show out of hundreds ever caused seizures. Don't exaggerate.

2. What will make it interesting is when half those teenagers die in battle and the mourning adds a human element not replicated in ANY American cartoon since the animated Transformers movie.

3. Right. Pretty girls in short skirts. THE HORROR! Thank the lord nobody else in entertainent is that shallow...oh wait, what was that show? The one that had the guy with the ears?

I would submit that you haven't seen the best anime there is, because the best doesn't leave you feeing like you've seen it all before. I used to think that too. You haven't seen everything.

Although I'm not a huge anime fan, I've seen a fair amount of it that I like--and, of course, there's also plenty of crap. Just like with anything else.

The most recent one I saw that I thought was pretty decent is Summer Wars.

I've watched Akira (usually claimed to be one of the best Anime movies ever) and got about half-way through before stopping it. It just did not interest me in the slightest.

I've been trying to think of a single anime that I've seen that fits that definition. Soul Eater? One Piece? Code Geass? Macross? Sailor Moon? That's closer, but it's still miles off the mark. Macross? Nah.

I've seen Akira too. I didn't like it either. Akira is not EVERYTHING.

I cut my teeth on Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers back in the day, but I didn't really get into anime as a whole until I stopped listening to what people told me was the best and went to video stores and made my own choices. Some anime I consider the best nobody has ever heard of because all the vocal boosters get all their anime from Cartoon Network and syfy's animonday.

Wow, I don't think I've ever been so seriously insulted by anything I've ever seen another person write. I'll admit it right now, I tend to go for the Naruto and Bleach type stuff, and while I can see where people could be annoyed by them, if you stick with them, there actually is a surprising amount of depth under the brightly colored, cheerful surface. IMO of course. And if you're wondering, I enjoy American animation too.

I often heard a lot of good things about Akira, and other movies I can't think of their names all I've tried watching or have watched in their entirety. My best-friend was heavily into anime in high-school so I got shown a lot of stuff and none of it was really for me. The style of animation and story-telling just did not work for me, and I often found the voice work to be most annoying.

It's not my thing and I personally would not miss it if it went away. Though I'm sure it'd effect the many people out there who do like anime.

Just because I don't like something that should diminish the enjoyment others find in it.

I've tried watching anime plenty of times over the last 20-25 years various types and yeah, unfairly, it all gets boiled down to pretty much the same stuff in my mind.

Annoying voices, flashy animation, rather bland sound effects and uninteresting -for me- stories. Most of the ones that stand out my mind pretty much boiled down to some super-powered teen with an oversized weapon having to save the city from a large monster of some-sort (usually involving a character with a frozen-open mouth screaming with a scrolling, flashing back ground behind him as he holds out the weapon.)

Now, sure, the same can be said for a lot of stories and characters but for some reason the style used in anime just didn't work for me.

The one anime I remember sort-of liking is one I saw about some girls that did street-racing. But I didn't watch much of it because what I saw wasn't dubbed to English and I personally think a lot is lost between hearing a line said and reading it and much of my TV "watching" is usually done by ear anyway.

Anime isn't for me. For whatever reason it's just never appealed or worked for me.

Well there's your problem. Dubs suck. Unless they're done by Disney.

Yeah, I can't stand to watch anything dubbed. It's almost universally awful.

It always amuses me that Whofan starts these types of threads, but never comes back.

On topic, I never got into anime, though I did watch some "regular" anime as well as Hente. Just never appealed to me.

That Doctor Who one was kinda neat though.

And bad dubbing is the whole point of watching Japanese stuff in general, isn't it? ;)

I like a small percentage of anime, usually "harder" SF anime, and some of it is as about as good as the entire visual genre has produced. Ghost in the Shell in particular came out around the same time as the universally lauded Lion King, and I just simply thought the story and animation blew it out of the water. To dismiss all of it is simply a dis-service.

RAMA

Anime is, and always will be, the very stuff of nightmares. You look at it initially, and wonder why anyone got so far into it’s abysmal lack off value. There is nothing for it to go off of except smut and story lines dedicated to twisting the perception of the viewer. The oldest anime was crudely made and devoid of any originalityAnime, is to some, better than all other forms of entertainment. These people called ‘otaku’ (who spend an inordinate amount of time watching these lackluster cartoons) don’t seem to realize that they could be better using their hours contributing to a much higher purpose in life. We get to have these wee years in our childhoods for cartoons and toys, before we know any better, then we need to move on to more important matters. A man, especially a man, is nothing, when all he can conceivably do is watch either some vomit-inducing, moe, ecchi, hentai, or play eroge dating games while committing autoerotism in front o his PC storing many GB of pirated data
Yet, I can see what would get a poor soul into anime. Manga also. It has to do with a lack of acceptance. A huge lack of belonging and desire to interact with other human beings. This mental disorder of delving into an inexcusably tawdry form of escape just goes to show how much it hurts for some people to be alive. I can sympathize, but don’t much care to leave it be that what some people do is acceptable by any social standard. When all a person does is gawk at a screen with animated characters for most of his/her life, they are unmistakably degenerates.
Anime will die off, then maybe rebuild from the debris of an era where Japan was the home of corrupt businessmen. It could be worthy of reproach, perhaps rivaling Disney’s reign of racist and hidden sexual imagery.

So be careful what you show to your children. They just might become otaku some day if you mistake an anime for a sweetly ”innocent” American cartoon.

You seriously, don't know what you're talking about and thus have no logical stance whatsoever for ranting about a topic you don't seem to know anything about. If you did you would know that anime is an entire medium, incorporating every genre under the sun and then some producing works for all ages and genders. So saying anime sucks is the equivalent of saying all movies suck, which is just plain laughably ignorant. Like any medium, quality of things produced fluctuates and varies depending on the opinions and tastes of those watching it. So thus if you haven't found any you like you need to simply watch more or switch genres or demographics. If you aren't willing to do that much then you shouldn't complain when other people can, because you have only your own inadequacies to adapt and impatience to blame for not being able to find any.

If anyone needs help finding something just ask me. I've seen a lot of it of varying type, genre, and demographic and could recommend some stuff.

I was a Japanese language major in college, and I spent a year living in Japan. I like a lot of Japanese things... but anime isn't really one of them. And I was quite alone in that regard, when I was in school with other Japanese majors.

Now, I like the Miyazaki films, and there are a handful of other series that I've seen that I have enjoyed on some level. I certainly don't hate anime, nor do I look down on it because it contains a lot of crap. Any genre or medium of art is bound to be full of mostly garbage. But I'm usually able to find exceptions that are worth my time. And after years of really trying, it seems that I've found fewer of those exceptions in anime than I had expected to find.

Sometimes I'll find a show that looks promising, only to be completely turned off of it for a reason that is entirely unique to anime. One example is a show one of my friends really like in my third year of college, a vampire-related anime called "Moon Phase" (I think). He had me watch one episode and it was kind of interesting, full of a nice dark, horror atmosphere and really beautiful artwork.

Sure, the main character seemed to be a high school age girl... again... seriously, that's starting to get annoying, anime, there are other demographics of humans that exist, you know. But for what it was, I could see myself enjoying it. Then he put on the next episode, about half of which was the main (underage) character trying on different outfits in *extremely* sexual poses. That was the end of that for me.

I liked Cowboy Bebop. I liked Kino's Journey, which is a relatively obscure anime from what I've seen, but thankfully free of most of what drags anime down in my view... even though the main character is a (*sigh*) teenage girl. I also liked the first season of Hell Girl, because even though the titular character was a (*sigh*) teenage girl, the real protagonist of the series was an actual, bonafide adult. Huh. Turns out they do exist. Who knew?

Most anime just has something that turns me off, whether it's the weird sexual undertones of the lighter stuff or the hardcore violence of the darker stuff. I wish there were more of a middle ground because I do like the medium of animation and the idea of someone, somewhere doing something interesting and different with it appeals to me. But it seems that Japanese animation is often as boxed-in as American animation. It's just a different shaped box. Oh well, at least there's some stuff in each box I like.

Akira is THE BOMB.

I'll never forget reading a Marvel comics letters column in the late 80s where the Marvel editor had just come back from a screening in Japan and he was basically foaming at the mouth in excitement over the film.

I find it amusing that by and large the only people defending it are the same ones with anime-ish avatars. Who would have guessed? I find the vast majority of it annoying and tedious as well. And most of the time, the one fanboys claim to be the best of the bunch, are little more than pretentious and fear-mongering drivel. The only thing I've seen from the art form that was any good are the ones dealing with mythology and fables, such as Spirited Away. And that had more to do with the story rather than the weakly drawn style of art. Sure, the animation itself is really nice except when they do things like the cheap still-frame-and-move-the-camera stuff; that had to have set them back a couple of bucks. But it's the actual styles of art that makes me want to stab myself in the face whenever I'm exposed to it. It's just flat-out hideous. The fact that so much of the material they use with that style of art and animation is trite and full of pedophiliac themes (don't even try to defend that -- anime has more upskirt shots of little girls than any other medium I've ever been exposed to in my life, inclluding actual upskirt porn websites) just adds fuel to the fire of my loathing for anything anime. EDIT: Hmm. It's stripping out all of my carriage returns for some reason. EDIT 2: Weird. Sorry for the unintended block of text.
