Angry Old Women

Gary Sebben

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
First the Drumhead, and then Silicon Avatar. There seems to be a pattern of cranky, old women with a thinly veiled Victorian aspect to them (aristocratic, bunned hair, bulky clothes). I think Data's "mom" in Inheritance also fits this trope. Any others out there?

There's also the bodyguard in "The Dauphin" although whether or not she's actually an old lady is debatable since the old lady is just her 'human form' and she's actually a furry, snarling monster. :)

Actually, I realize Troi's mom is also a hair bunned Victorian with her giant dresses. What's up with TNG and Victorian women? Especially in such a so-called sexually enlightened culture?

Whatever it is with Victorian women on Star Trek... I frakkin' love it! :D

Meh. TNG was just a relatively revolutionary show, that wasn't afraid to show older women. Geordi's mom is the captain of a starship. The ENT-C's captain is a woman. there's a handful of older female admirals, including Nechayev

but if you want Victorian women, you needn't go any further than Regina Bartholomew

I think that the woman from Silicon Avatar had a right to be cranky. They were hunting the creature that killed her son.

It was refreshing to see people such as the cranky (and batty) old lady from "Silicon Avatar" as well as Captain Maxwell from "The Wounded" who didn't quite fit the perfect enlightened human mold of the future.
