A Different Kind of Asshole
Re: Andy Probert releases prelim plans for USS Ambassador ki
It's funny you should mention that, because the orbital drydock designed by Andrew for TMP was equipped with expansion joints that would enable the facility to change size and shape depending on the dimensions of the starship it happened to be servicing at the time, although I suspect the Ambassador Class would be just a teensy weensy bit too big even with the structure fully expanded. Of course, the extreme modularity of the architecture would permit the relatively simple dismantling and "snapping together" of several existing drydocks to create one überdock. I assume that this type of reconfiguration may have happened before, considering that those things have been in orbit for over a century by the time of TMP.
Which, coincidentally, is exactly the size Doug Trumbull wished Magicam's NCC-1701 Refit miniature was built to when he took over the visual effects on TMP.

One thing that I like about the current WIP image is the dramatic camera angles. I can imagine this ship in a TMP-like, epic story of some kind, slowly pulling out of a larger version of the TMP drydock... and then leaping into warp speed.![]()

And 1:72 would give us a model just under 24 feet long.
