I like B better for less clutter, but I do like the color contrast of A. Call me Waffle, but if I had to choose I'd say B.

Well, thank you all for such great feedback. Some of the messages were simple; thanks. Many were embellished with impressive logic and good reasons for your preferences; thanks for those too.

A large group liked the added detail while others preferred a simpler look, indicating the cross-axis detailing jolted the eye as it traveled the length of the nacelle... and I agree. If Trek Starships were traditionally chunked up with Galactica-type parts, the visible coils would fit right in. But they are traditionally smoother and I'm a traditional kinda guy. I don't have a problem with the Glactica world at all, but Star Trek is of a different universe.

You'll see that the 'coils' and their covering have now been widened to further unify that section. The logic behind it all? A nod to this ship's predecessor, Excelsior, and a nod to the many & varied warp engine schematics.

Before I tackle that, I have to resolve the dorsal footing. The Eng-hull has a specific area surrounding it and I need to have that in place first.

Updated! Andrew, would it be at all possible - for those of us who have not been blessed with either the time or talent to effectively assemble and paint model kits - to purchase from you the actual digital meshes and texture maps in order for a third-party contractor to fabricate a USS Ambassador miniature to the customer's preferred scale? As an example, I usually engage A&M Model Makers to build satellite models for clients as well as historical speculative spacecraft for my own interior decoration requirements. :)

These I'd really like to see! I'm picturing 2001's DISCOVERY ONE alongside the British Interplanetary Society's design for DAEDULUS, with little tiny Pan-Am space clippers and moonbuses surrounding them, and a huge friggin' cutaway L-5 colony suspended over the other half of the room. And on the floor? Soleri-scapes.

While I sympathize with your time/talent dilemma, and appreciate the complement of your request, I am running a business here with my partner 'Federation Models' and can't be sharing this kind of data. I do, however, understand the desire to own a perticular model that matches one's favorite scale size, which is why I announced the Ambassador will be released initially in 1:1400.

Having said that, however, I will prepare a poll question regarding scale preferences. Please understand that 1/72 scale is not even a possibility... right now.

The Ambassador-class starship measures 1721 feet (524.5 m) in length, according to Probert's 1987 size comparison chart (link on this page).

At the scales mentioned in the survey...

1:2500 - 21.0 cm (8-1/4") in length

1:1400 - 37.5 cm (14-3/4") in length

1:1000 - 52.5 cm (20-5/8") in length

One thing that I like about the current WIP image is the dramatic camera angles. I can imagine this ship in a TMP-like, epic story of some kind, slowly pulling out of a larger version of the TMP drydock... and then leaping into warp speed. :)

In most shots of TNG, the much larger Enterprise-D came off looking like a toy rather than an humungous yet graceful starship. I suspect this was a combination of uninspired cinematography and the overexaggerated details and chunky proportions of the four-foot filming miniature.
