Just came across this Doug Drexler video where Andy Probert walks through designing the Enteprise-D, highlighting some things that I didn't know about. Such as:
    • The main bridge was almost placed at the rear of the Star Drive's cobra head.

    • Ambassador was at first the class of the "D" not the "C"

My favourite of all the Star Trek ships by quite a margin. Absolutely love the Enterprise-D and always get a kick from seeing her 'remade' for the ENT finale and the PIC premiere.

I understand Probert wanted to bury the bridge deep within the ship (which lets be fair we can probably all agree makes sense) but Rodenberry insisted it be placed on top of the saucer to provide a sense of scale.

I agree with both the D being the most beautiful ship and also of course logically it makes sense to have the bridge 'buried' inside. On the other hand all modern aircraft carriers also have the bridge quite exposed on top. And providing a sense of scale makes also sense.

I love that Trek designers back then thought out every aspect of a ship, even in the event those things were never to make it to screen. Little details like this show the craft that went into it. A lot of love for it.
