Andy Mangels in trouble?

Here's a link to Stephen King's Haven Foundation's website.Maybe they can help

From the desk of Stephen King:
In the summer of 1999, I was struck by a careless driver and nearly killed while taking my daily walk. It was ten months before I was able to work productively again. Some years later, a good friend of mine, audio reader Frank Muller, suffered terrible head injuries as a result of a motorcycle accident. He will never work again. My luck was infinitely better than Muller’s, but the two events set me thinking about the uniquely perilous situation of many freelance artists. The majority of mid-list writers, audio readers, and freelancers in the book and publishing industry have little or no financial cushion in the event of a sudden catastrophic accident such as that suffered by Muller and myself. Many aren’t affiliated with any professional associations or guilds that can help them in the event of such reversals. Even those who are affiliated with organizations such as The Authors’ Guild cannot look for much beyond token help over a short period of time.

My response to this has been the creation of The Haven Foundation. Its goals will be fourfold:

First, to establish a compassionate and committed group of board members willing to sift through cases and identify those where the need seems to be the greatest. These “greatest need” cases would be freelance artists—writers, readers, and those in the associated publishing industry—who have found themselves unable to work due to disease or accident. We will also be focusing on freelancers associated with the book and publishing industry who lost their homes and work spaces (with freelancers these are often the same) as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Second, to help a number of these individuals each year, based on need.

Third, to establish cut-off points for such help. As I have discovered, the decision to cut off aid is an agonizing one, and best made by a group rather than by an individual. I have come to believe, however, that it must be made if help is to be rendered to the many rather than the few.

Fourth, to seek fundraising opportunities so that The Haven Foundation can continue to do this work.

Sucks to hear this... I just read the Enterprise novel "Kobayashi Maru" on my Kindle and thought it rocked.

I'm very sorry to hear about Andy's problems. I can't understand why the M&M partnership has apparently ended. Any word on this?

I have no problem with it being posted here. Please don't chastise ClayinCA on my behalf.

Yes, it's a bit embarrassing that people are finding out that things have gone badly for me lately, but it's not as if the economy isn't hurting a lot of people. I hope that everyone will help others in need in this time of crisis, not just famous ones (or "famous-in-some-circles" ones). The art auction posting did get a few unexpected people reaching out to support and help me, and I appreciate the supportive sentiments expressed here. Please continue those kinds of sentiments toward each other as well!

Thank you, Andy. I truly do hope that you are in no way offended - it was purely my intention to let people know that you might be able to use a little moral support right now, as this board has always been (to me, anyway) a community of friends, and I just thought that there were people here who would want to know that you were going through tough times right now so they could offer you their love and good wishes, for whatever it's worth. I wish I was in a position to help out, as I've been a fan of your writing since back in the Amazing Heroes days. Anyway, do hang in there, and again, if I did annoy or embarrass you in any way, I completely apologize (to you - I couldn't give a damn what KingstonTrekker thinks).

I do post here, and appreciate the concern. I don't want to go into specifics, but suffice it to say that the lack of paying work, and the bad economy, and a series of health problems, has definitely led my life to some critical places. As it has for many people in America.

As with others, I'm trying my best to stay afloat, whether that means continuing to search for new paying writing work, selling off some of my most treasured and valuable items, or working at a "traditional" job for the first time in 20+ years. In this latter case, bartending.

I do hope to get more Trek work at some point in the future, whether from Pocket or IDW or other sources. And I appreciate supportive thoughts and messages. Many people are going through the dark forest in this country at this time; I hope we can all make it safely and swiftly through to the other side.

I Hear You, I and My Wife are down to one source of income, she was diagnosed with Cancer in January and has gone thru the first round of Treatments, coming out feeling well, but not well enough to go back to work, and she might need continuing treatment in the future. Soon her short term will run out and we'll have to pay for a higher percentage of her medical insurance, add that to mortgages and everything else and I know what you are going thru, good luck to you and I hope all comes out well, I've enjoyed your work in the past. P.S. when she was initially diagnosed I sold off many prized possession, I've never regretted doing so, it's amazing how those things lose their value, in light of what you could lose.
