Andrew Probert teases us with his 2010 SotL entry!

I can haz vertical warbirdz?

This is going to be a thing for you now, huh... ;)

I think it's amazing the AP is still willing to mess around in the world of trek long after his working for the live action show has passed.

The man is one of the founding fathers of trek visual style and design.

Probably... not. :shifty:

I agree. When you think about how much he defined for us, it's really rather amazing that he's still contributing to the technolore.

Hey, don't let me stop you... In fact, it's kinda growing on me. Annoying but fun and plucky at the same time. ;)

Indeed. Same with Rick and his interactions with the fans on here... I've always thought of Star Trek Tech and Design being lead by "the big three" of Matt Jeffries, Andy Probert, and Rick Sternbach.

Add Mike Okuda to the mix (after all, his groundwork shaped the look of Trek graphics since ST4) and we´re in agreement. ;)

Praetor - I know you hang out in the Trek Art section too, so you might look up a title that describes ships different than the standard circular primary hull and tubular secondary hull. I can't remember the name of it, but one of the posters lamented the fact that there were no vertical ships in Trek. They were all "horizontal" (if you can call it that in space).

A few posts later, either Probert or Sternbach posts an original sketch idea for the D'deridex. Sure enough, it had the same basic shape we are accustomed too, but was 90 degrees offset with the nacelles amidships along the dorsal and ventral lines. Bascially, a vertical ship.

I like the D'deridex as finally approved, but I really liked this idea of having a more alien approach to starship design.

This warbird, whatever the orientation, is one of my all-time favorite Trek ships and seeing a new rendition of it in the next calendar makes me wish 2009 were drawing to a close :)

Yep, those be the ones I was thinking of. I first saw the upper drawing and some other sketches Mr. Probert made in 'The Art of Star Trek.' (Great book by the way. I used to sit in the bookstore and flip through it, until my mom, er - Santa Claus - finally bought it for me for Christmas.)

I, too, wish the producers would have gone with the vertical version. I like the one we got, but I really like the idea of not all ships sitting on the same 'galactic plane.' And everyone who's read many of my posts knows I'm obsessed with the Romulans.

I'm guessing the one in the painting might be more like the latter one - with a vertical 'head' matching the one on the actual D'Deridex. Maybe this is our A-type warbird? :)

Sorry, I didn't think of a vertical Warbird... for 2010 that is,... but it is definitely on my list now.

Andrew-

JNG - Thanks for posting that and proving that I am not going crazy or senile (at least not yet). Those were exactly the pics about which I was thinking.
