andPOP's review of the "screener footage"...decidedly mixed

Some critics and early birds in 1977 didn't care all too much for the original STAR WARS either. And I remember more than a few "meh" or negative early reviews of recent classics like O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? Sometimes the critics and naysayers don't know shit.

Although TIME magazine did declare "Star Wars" the "Best Movie Of The Year" the Monday before it opened. That got the attention of a friend of mine who suggested early Friday evening that we go see what it was like.

Even some that were on the record as knocking SW were misrepresented. As I recall, ANALOG editor Ben Bova thought STAR WARS was horseshit, but TIME or NEWSWEEK misquoted him as saying it was 'the gone with the wind' of scifi.

but some of the early trailers ect really didnt get people exited.
it looked rather disjointed.
that time review was based on the entire film and not a 20 minute snippet.

It was TIME, looks like.

"Star Wars is the costume epic of the future," says Ben Bova, editor of Analog, one of the leading science fiction magazines. "It's a galactic Gone With the Wind. It's perfect summer escapist fare."
Makes me wonder what Bova really thought of Gone with the Wind, though.

It was the Star Wars of the Deep South.

That's BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, with George Peppard: "Alright Sador, you sonofabitch. This is Space Cowboy from Planet Earth!"

Dude even has a confederate flag on his ship.

Yeah, I'll bet a BSG movie would make 100 million easy...

It would probably make about as much money as "Serenity," and be just as good. :techman:

Thankfully, we are getting a resolution to BSG, and on its creators' own terms, so we will likely never want or need a feature film.

Couldn't ask for anything more.

Good thing, too...

I'm crossing my fingers on the Trek box office, fully aware that it might well pull Serenity numbers unless it manifests a Star Wars type draw.

This reviewer didn't really seem to know his stuff as many people have pointed out.
so eh...

It could be the biggest box office flop in Trek history and still pull in bigger numbers than Serenity. Not going to happen.

I honestly believe that with the right amount of hype, good reviews and decent word of mouth Star Trek will be successful enough to warrant another movie. It wasn't that long ago that Trek was considered "cool", at least as cool as "Wars". Mind you 90% of the people who went to see the prequel trilogy haven't had anything to do with any Wars media at all since they saw those movies, people don't have to think Trek is "that cool" to go see it if they hear it's an enjoyable movie to watch.

What did Nemesis pull in again? Point is, the stigma might still be there, big first weekend notwithstanding, to keep people away, unless there is good word of mouth.

A "big first weekend" would put this, or any movie, way outside of "Serenity" territory.

There's no risk in predicting that this movie will do a great deal more business than "Serenity" did, and suggesting that it might not is just silly no matter how reasonably phrased.

If I didn't make the point, my bad--proportionately to the budget for the film. I thought someone above said something about a low budget movie making a profit versus a high budget film not doing so.

If Serenity cost 40 mill and made 40 mill (domestic), then it wasn't a huge failure.

If Trek cost 150 mill and makes 80 mill (domestic), then it WILL have been a huge failure.

Hopefully that clarifies what I was (unsuccessfully) trying to say.

This reviewer is singing the praises of the BSG series, and saying this movie doesn't measure up? Am I misreading that?

I hope it isn't as convoluted and dark as BSG. (A show which I and about 20 other souls are sticking out) BSG at it's height had a niche appeal. Star Trek needs to be much more accessable and relatable than BSG or it's DOA.

Can't really tell anything from this article, other than this person is more than a little out to lunch.

About $42 million domestic. $60 or $70 million worldwide. If my memory is correct. It made about ten million less in the States than TFF did in 1989, and that's factoring in the increase in the universal and often massive increases in ticket prices between '89 and '02.
