NOTE: I'd like to encourage new people to join this contest. It is a lot of fun and you don't need to do it every time. For anybody who might not know how, I've created a simple instruction set at the end of this post. There are other ways to create and post avatars, but the one of laid out should get you started if you want to use it.
The Mission:
The Academy Awards are being presented on March 15, 2026. Almost every year, a handful of SF&F films are nominated. Often they get noms for technical achievement but sometimes they get into the more coveted categories and have even one Best Picture on occasion.
This contest is for any Science Fiction films that have been nominated for any of the major awards in any decade, meaning the ones that are presented on the actual broadcast. This will be limited only to hard or soft science fiction movies, so nothing that falls into the fantasy or horror realm unless it is a crossover film like Pigs in Space or Event Horizon. No Super-Hero movies even if they are set in space, either. Monster films are allowed if the monsters origins are not supernatural. (Godzilla yes, Dracula no). The film only has to be nominated and you have the entire history of the Oscars to choose from.
I'm excluding horror and fantasy because it would just make too many movies to choose from and I think you could have a contest for each of them on their own.
Standard Rules Apply: MAX: 200x200 pixels and 1Mb. You can post up to three avatars.
***WANT TO JOIN BUT DON'T KNOW HOW?***
This contest is losing popularity so I'm encouraging first time entries. It is not that hard. Here are a few simple steps and links to tools.
1. Get an idea.
2. Find an image or a short video online.
3. Use a tool like Paint or your photo editor to crop the image and resize it to 200x200 pixels and confirm it is 1Mb or less.
4. If you want to create a short video gif, you can do it with your onboard computer software or you can use simple online editing tools like EZGif (ezgif.com).
5. Upload your files to a free photo storage site like Imgur (imgur.com). These sites have prepared BBcodes that you can copy.
6. Post your photo title and other information requested for the contest in one or more posts and the code you copied.
7. The photos/gifs get embedded in your post so everyone can see the.
8. If you don't get it right the first time you can go back and edit your post as often as you need and just copy and paste the new code over the old. The only rule is that once you make a post, you should stick with the character, movie or whatever you posted as others will be deciding and creating posts on what they see up there.
