And the Next Cancelled Show is...

The most inexplicable gap was season two of Carnival Row coming out four years after season one even though it was in the bag.

Four years is a long time in the life of a Streaming series. After 4 years, most would have given up at any chance of a return.

My best guess is that even while they may have it in the bag, they sometimes wait for a time when a release schedule isn't so busy. But no wonder streaming services are so unsustainable if they can't manage adequate release times between seasons. It's a wonder they even try at all.

There's this very good series about the Austrian Empress of the Hapsburg Dynasty on Netflix. It's similar in approach to The Crown. The problem is that the first season originally came out in 2022, and I saw no hope of any continuation, but then in November this year, the second season was released. I'd completely forgotten about it at that point, but thankfully it's well-written enough to be able to overcome to most of the issue with long gaps.

I find a series has more of an issue with gaps between seasons if they're plot-based rather than character-oriented.

The only thing I'm surprised about is the fact that MTV hasn't been shut down earlier.

And the weird thing about Canadian broadcasters is that they tend to have a penchant of wanting Canadian versions of American channels, so not only do we have own MuchMusic, but also our own version of MTV, and we're soon supposed to be getting our own version of USA Network.

So, would it be called Canada Network?

No, USA Network Canada. How's that for confusing?

I don't get it either, as it would have made more sense when they were still making scripted programming such as Monk and White Collar. I don't think they make scripted programming anymore, but I could be wrong.

But it's replacing the Discovery Channel under Bell seeing as they lost those rights to Rogers.

On October 17, 2024, NBCUniversal announced an agreement with Bell Canada to launch a Canadian version of USA Network on January 1, 2025. The channel will be a relaunch of Bell's Discovery Channel, following that company's loss of rights to the former Discovery, Inc. channel brands to Rogers Media. This iteration of USA Network will still be maintained by CTV Specialty Television, which is a joint venture of Bell Media and ESPN Inc., stemming from its ownership of The Sports Network (TSN).

MuchMusic doesn't even pretend to be a music channel anymore, and indeed is calling itself Much these days.

Do you have a source on that? I'm seeing plenty of retro (and by that I mean '90s) Nickelodeon stuff on P+ right now, including Rugrats, Eureeka's Castle, classic Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Salute Your Shorts, Ren & Stimpy, Hey Dude, and Rocko's Modern Life.

These post-Netflix streaming services are all late to the game. They can't all be successful. Amazon and Apple can burn money with their streaming since it's such a small part of their overall business but the others can't. Everything on the streamer costs money. That VHS copy of Police Academy 5 that no one's rented in six months isn't costing Blockbuster Video any additional money. Streaming is a whole different ballgame.

Maybe they should change that paradigm.... maybe a minimal fee to license and pay per view... less for less popular stuff

Former Amazon Studios executive:

“The number of things that tank on Amazon is remarkable. There are so many things that people hardly watch and it would be embarrassing to release those streaming numbers. I used to get this daily email, which basically said, ‘here are the one hundred movies that people are watching most on Amazon SVOD today by the minute.’ It was always a lot of Tom Cruise sci-fi movies, action movies from the ’90s and aughts, and Talladega Nights.”
