Even Netflix is pretty bad at letting people know about new stuff. Yes, there's the new releases section showing new TV shows and movies and top 10's of each, but because they have so much new stuff every few weeks, it's almost impossible to keep up with it all, so lots of stuff just gets buried and cancelled. And it's frustrating to hear a show get cancelled before I even get a chance to get to it. And the other issue is that if a show does get renewed, it usually takes so long for a new season to come out that I've forgotten what happened in the first season. There was one instance of a show I liked and couldn't wait for a new season, and by the time it did release, I ended up giving up on it because the recap was awful at recapping what was important and lost interest.

Take Squid Game for example. Netflix's biggest hit ever, bigger than Bridgerton or Stranger Things for a time.
S1 came out in Sept 2021.
And now S2 is coming out Dec'24, THREE years later!
It could be a hit again but seriously three years gap between seasons is just too fucking much.
All these corps got money to burn but never capitalizes on the more popular stuff.

I mean, I understand shows taking a long time to release, but at least give viewers better recaps that actually mean something? The recap I mentioned was awful because it was so vague as to be useless, so when came time to viewing the second season, I was just as confused as I would have been without it.

I strongly suspect the recent writers/actors strike is a big part of it. A number of shows are late in releasing their newer seasons - everything got backlogged. Things should hopefully get back on track by next year.

But yeah, long hiatuses feel like generally pretentious bullshit. I think HBO was the first to really make that the most noticeable with Sopranos. After that, everyone was doing it.

AMC cancels Parish after one season, whatever that was. I see it starred Giancarlo Esposito and Skeet Ulrich.

These long gaps are just embarrassing. Studios have got very lazy.

Studios are chasing the "prestige" titles, fogetting that those barely make money.
When subscribers are watching reruns on the apps rather than overtly expensive brand new shows they have a huge problem.

Yep, exactly. It feels more like a typical Streaming show thing. It might have something to do with so many streaming shows being produced at any one studio and spreading their load..., but streaming shows are typically much shorter, ie 8-10 episodes a season, thus the wait feels even longer.

And meanwhile, I've been watching House of the Dragon and noticed I was missing Episode 4 out of an 8 episode show via my dvr on-demand service. Come on... I feel shortchanged

The long gaps is a streaming thing, Yellowstone being an exception. Network and basic cable shows are expected to be on time every year like clockwork.

If you're on CSI: Milwaukee, you know when your season ends and when the next one begins and any work that you can fit in between seasons is fair game.

The other issue is, I think it's easy to lose interest when having to wait for so long. particularly since there's often no news when and if there are upcoming seasons in the works (unless you're one of the really popular ones), putting fans on the fence. I've often given up on a show thinking it was over and not coming back, only to see that it's receiving a new season, and by then my interest is not there anymore, unless it's something I'm already very keen on. So, I think a show with a long wait runs the risk of losing its fans. A lot can happen between when a show firsts airs to when a new season drops, enough that I feel can change things.

Often the case is something is already long in the can, particularly if it's not from a domestic market. Domestic shows often air closer to when they're done, but a streaming service can often sit on a season and air it much later.

This is what annoys me the most about them cancelling Lower Decks. It was the only dependable Trek show that came out every year. Without that gone new seasons of Trek could be very sporadic.

The CGI budget on Slow Horses is somewhat smaller than Carnival Row.

All the same, when they do release, they expect everyone to stop what they're doing and watch immediately or it's deemed a failure. I only remember the long gaps for the last two seasons, by which point, I think everyone had already moved on. The last two were definitely less compelling, made worse by the long wait.
