I didn't even realize that one was still going on.
Depending on the country some productions get government help and also it's a tax write off in some parts of the world.
Headline News--HLN--was abruptly cancelled today. Robin Meade did her last morning broadcast and the whole crew was there to say goodbye. CNN just axed them with no warning. So now they're going to run CNN on both channels until they can turn HLN into a 24-hr true crime network.
UGH.

I first heard about the cancellation on 12/1 on a morning radio talk show but yeah, pretty short notice of news about it happening.

That reminds me of a recent situation with a long-time Canadian news anchor who had been abruptly let go. The reason for her dismissal was one of 'demographics are changing, we need younger faces', rather one of her contract ending as they hadn't let her finish her contract, and it wasn't even something she had done, and there was so much backlash over the network's decision, and she wasn't even given courtesy of a goodbye.The way it had been handled was awful, and they ended up canning the person who fired her.

Honestly, I'm surprised Headline News was still even around (aside from the fact I don't have cable). Considering how the business model for cable news has changed in the last 10, 15 years to nonstop news 24/7 thanks to the proliferation of social media and mobile devices, Headline News has been redundant for a long time.
The same can be said for most/all television news, TBH.
Which is really unfortunate, especially regarding local news.
Part of my job is gathering news clips relevant to my work and its region, and it really breaks my heart to see how much the local news, both print and television, has decayed. Much of the channels overlap in coverage and the print just produces the same thing for multiple outlets.
And that's before you get to Sinclair Broadcast Group's meddling...
National / global news just turns my stomach daily. Local news is about the only thing I watch any more, but I've noticed that even that starts to get on my nerves on occasion - mostly when it's basically the same limited batch of stories regurgitated every 30 minutes.

I remember back in the 80s and 90s my best friend always had it on in his office.
I think that's what they did to Jayne Doyle here in Adelaide, she's been a local icon reading the news and recently announced she was leaving at the end of the year and the rumour mill say she was maybe pushed to make way for younger a face to fill her seat.

That is so true, both in print and local broadcasting. And it gets significantly reduced when an area is rural, or at least a small market, and I find that can be dangerous as those can be more affected by all this as there's a real danger of rural communities losing their voice. We have one local TV station in my region, which serves a large regional area with multiple districts, and the parent company has only just recently upgraded its transmitters for HD broadcast, as recently as about a year and a half ago, and it's taken this long because the parent hasn't deemed it important enough. One radio station, again serving up a large area, and it's a satellite to the big mothership, and the local coverage is quite good, so there's that. It also has lots of local production. Then we have the online publications, one which from a small independent network is full of actual reporting with good local content by actual journalists. The other is from a large conglomerate pushing out synidcated articles, some of which don't even pertain to us. I don't even think they have any local reporters anymore there. I've seen the quality of their articles deteriorate a lot within the last 20 years or so, which pretty much end up being one-parapgraph affairs if they're local news. I've once seen an article warning people to watch out for alligators in Florida via them, and I'm in Canada, and it was tagged as "local news"! Another recent one I saw last week, and I wish I was kidding about this, was a hilariously bad article about the history of penis sizes. Like, what's the world coming to if that's considered news?
The danger from syndication is of having others from a larger city further away from what's happening and calling the shots on what's important for multiple regions without much context for what's happening, so you get stuff that feels largely out of touch.

I liked it, too. I get up really early for work, and I just wanted a run-down of the news without all the fluff. It was a quick run-down of current events with likeable on-air personalities.
It will be missed.
I haven't seen Monarch myself, but I've gotten the impression that it could never hold a candle to Sopranos or the current run of Yellowstone. Watching the latter right now (despite not being a big Costner fan) and loving every minute of it.
