And the Next Cancelled Show is...

It's got to still be better than Duck Dynasty.

Jason
Honestly don't know - never watched that one either.

The only reality "type" shows I've ever watched were Face Off, Hot Set and Skin Wars, all of which focused more on the artistry and skill of the contestants rather than artificially manufactured bullshit drama (even though those also had some questionable moments with the more inherently dramatic personalities involved) by the producers. All of them have been cancelled, so that shows what I know, I guess.

I also occasionally enjoy "Graveyard Cars" on Velocity, since I really like vintage Mopar muscle cars, but some of the people on that show really irritate the fuck out of me.

I watched the Stan Lee Superhero show were people made their costumes and were tested years ago on Sci-Fi channel. Plus the Joe Schmo show were everyone was a actor except him but he thinks they are all on a regular reality show. I like Jerry Seinfeld getting Coffee with comedians and also "These are the Toys that made us" also on Netflix.

LOVE Toys that Made Us - although I view that more as a documentary than reality.

Forgot to mention Cosplay Melee - another craft-based show. A lot of those people were super talented, including John Dykstra's daughter (some serious pedigree there!) but I couldn't stand Ya Ya Han or whatever her name is. She looked down her nose at everyone who came into this thing. She's good, but wow, I couldn't deal with that for more than a few minutes at a time. She had the Diva Dial cranked up to 11 the entire show's run - also cancelled.

To be fair, there were plenty of white trash takedowns in that show as well. I have no statistics on portrayed demographics (although I am curious) - I just don't like reality shows like that in general. Positively mindless dreck.
There were a pair of studies done on the show published in academic journals in 2004. I'm including the abstracts and links to the full PDF versions of the papers below.

The first was by researchers at Old Dominion University:
This article examines the portrayal of gender and race in the USA reality television program COPS. Fifty one police officers apprehending sixty perpetrators were content analyzed into four categories including race (of both officer and perpetrator), gender (of both officer and perpetrator), US Uniform Crime Report (UCR) type offense (type I or type II), as well as the specific type of crime depicted. The vast majority of police officers shown on COPS were white male (92%) and the majority of offenders were nonwhite males (62%). Black men were most likely to be shown engaging in a crime of burglary or theft or crimes involving drugs. Hispanic men were most likely to be involved in UCR Part I offenses; however, they were in a distinct minority on these episodes. On the other hand, the most likely scenario for white offenders is to be shown committing an alcohol related offense or causing, or being part of, a domestic disturbance. Few white women were included on the show. One was a police officer and among the other five, one was looking for a lost child and the others were picked up for a variety of relatively minor violations (driving under the influence, drug possession, stolen bike, animal disturbance). No minority women were shown on COPS during this period of evaluation - as either an officer or perpetrator of a crime. The authors argue that media images depicted in COPS are at odds with UCR official crime statistics and reinforce stereotypes and myths about the nature of crime in the United States.

The second study was by two professors, one from U of Washington, the other from UC Long Beach:
Crime-based reality TV continues to be a mainstay of contemporary prime-time viewing. This crime-based reality programming offers audiences information about police, crime, and police-suspect interations, presented in dramatic form. The present study considers the dramatic elements in two of these popular prime-time programs, Cops and Wildest Police Videos, focusing on the ways in which the reality-based programming represents police/suspect interaction through an examination of 81 anecdotes. Specifically, this rhetorical study identifies a representative anecdote of the programs and comments on an important and troublesome feature of the anecdotal form. The paper argues that the form of these programs serves to justify controversial police practices and, of particular significance, the programming implicitly justifies the practice of racial profiling. Such programming offers audiences poor "equipment for living" in a society that needs to continue confronting the problems of racism and discrimination.

So good riddance to bad rubbish.

I have heard of that show Duck Dynasty but why was it so popular?

Hey if companies like Netflix can reward stupid people for, well being stupid and you have shows like Tiger King well I just shrug. Stupid is being rewarded and not shunned.

Well alrighty then, agreed! Pretty solid numbers there.

I just heard about “Cops” being cancelled by Paramount. Hopefully Langley Productions will upload the Season 33 episodes to iTunes (or maybe do a Blu-Ray/DVD release) and allow people to see those episodes that way, since I’ve been buying the Seasons on there for the past 10 years. As I recall, from the 20th Anniversary DVD, the episodes are usually shot about a six months to a year before they air, so with Season 33 having had a June 15th debut date, a lot of episodes would’ve been shot and finished by this point.

Live PD joins Cops as cancelled and Twitter has exploded.

I watched it, I enjoyed it and I think it showed a lot of what police do on a night to night basis, that it isn't all bad, but it isn't all good. It was just never going to survive in the current climate.

Who ever was making Cops, they have a machine for televising first responders on the job, that works.

They just need to switch to firemen or paramedics, and they get all their existing Cops contracts rehonoured.

I guess the new Walker Texas Ranger won't last long now. Time for the boys to sign up for a season 16 of Supernatural.

40 years ago a Panorama documentary about schools didn't have a narrator, because the director didn't want to intervene. Forgetting that by editing the footage, including some, dropping more, she was intervening.
Any editing is an editorial decision, and however much you try to be neutral, that influence is there.

Yes, but there's a wide, wide difference between a director doing this independently to tell what she thinks is the best story, and what was happening on Cops: police departments being allowed to dictate what footage could and couldn't be shown on TV so as to portray themselves in a better light. One is a natural part of the filmmaking process, regardless of whether you're doing narrative or documentary; the other is outright propaganda.

Not now. Cancelled! Brooklyn 99 Your gone! Flash goes smash. Hero works for the police so goodnight Denise. The Rookie goes no and Paw Patrol follows the flow.
