And the coolest Romulan of them all was/is....

I have two favorites Romulans... although I don’t clearly remember the representatives of this species, unfortunately... The first is the nameless Romulan from the "Balance of Terror", played by the magnificent Mark Lenard. And the second is Senator Letant from "Tears of the Prophets", played by David Birney. I met him recently, he is such a malicious and humorous racist. I liked him for a joke about the Klingons, plus he has a charming smile.

Carolyn Seymour rocks the house in any sci-fi show she signs up for, especially as Taris but is great as Toreth as well. Or Mirasta Yale... The Evil Leaper Zoe (oh yeah!), and so on...

But Taris, Romulan Commander with the hush-hush name from "Enterprise Incident", or Vreenak all get my vote. Especially as Vreenak wasn't a FAAAAAAKE!

Hi @Merlyn Emerald, welcome to TrekBBS!

As a new member you're probably not aware of this, but we ask our members not to revive threads if they've been inactive for more than a year. The last post in this thread before yours was 10 years ago! Having said that, I try not to be heavy handed when it comes to this rule, so I'll leave the thread open since other members have also responded.

Going forward, if you happen to come across an old thread that you'd like to contribute to, just go ahead and create a new one! You can always link back to any old posts you think have relevance.

Thanks!

Toreth is a good choice, she's one of the few Romulans that get developed, Carolyn Seymour, the actress who played her also played Commander Taris in the season 2 episode "Contagion".

Tomalak is a good one as a heel.
Tebok reintroduced the species to Trek, but I much prefer Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat.
Sela and Movar were obviously illegal during the Klingon Civil War.

The Romulans in DS9 are underused and while I liked a few of them, The Cardassians were much more of a focus of the series.

My favorite Romulan (I saw Nemesis when I was 19, so there is an obvious reason for this) is Donatra.

Not only is she gorgeous, she's essential to defeating Shinzon to the point where even Worf comments: "The Romulans fought with honor."

Vreenak: unremittingly hostile. Stephen McHattie was brilliant. Avery Brooks generally tries to dominate the stage around him, but McHattie gives Brooks no room to breathe. It ends up giving more of a sense of desperation to Sisko and the Federation.

"His friends call him by his name, his enemies don’t call him anything because they are all dead."
THE MOST INTERESTING ROMULAN IN THE GALAXY.

That is an excellent way of putting it. He had the attitude, in my opinion, of "I will accept only what I think is true, so keep your adorable opinions to a minimum and present me some facts."

Friendliness just wasn't his style, period.

Benedict Cumberbatch is sort of overexposed these days, but he would hve made a good Romulan. The Romulans were always at their best when they demonstrated they were as intelligent and cunning as Vulcans, but with a nasty emotional streak. Vulcans with their gloves off.

I saw a fan made poster for a theoretical Star Wars VII based on the Timothy Zahn novels with Thrawn:

Not sure if this is the exact one as there are now several, but... He would be terrific as a Romulan, I have no doubt, and he has some serious chops as an actor and can play thoughtful and menacing very effectively.

Wish that they had gone a different way with Khan but that was not his fault.

1 Unnamed RomCom
2 The titular Defector
