Actually, it's official when the deals are signed - we then find out about it when the studio or production or actors' reps make it public. Being reported at startrek.com has nothing to do with making it "official" and they often lag behind many other news organizations in reporting on Star Trek - notably the trades like Variety and Hollywood Reporter and often fan-run sites like www.trekmovie.com.

In this particular case, trekmovie.com and even startrek.com are out ahead of the trades.

In this particular case, trekmovie.com and even startrek.com are out ahead of the trades.

They can report it wherever they want and often as an inside "scoop" on fan sites but its not an official signing until its posted on the CBS/Paramount official site. The rest is semantics of timing. Both ST.com and trekmovie can mention they are in talks with certain actors ahead of time, but until its seen on ST.com (or Variety/HR) then its not official. It may as well be a rumor.

In this particular thread, the first post mentioned AICN as the source and the signing was a "maybe", and in fact not long after, ST.com had the "official" news ahead of tremovie.com. I checked. So that's why I posted it.
