And McCoy will be played by...

I can only hope he retain his native accent. Star Trek has yet to feature a New Zealander in a prominent role (!!!).

You gotta be kidding. If he can't do McCoy's accent correctly, they shouldn't have cast him. :p But I'm willing to give him a chance to impress me - personally, I think this is the worst bit of casting so far.

This is the first choice I can't really see, at least judging the book by its cover. McCoy wasn't swarthy or dark; more like a thin-lipped Caucasian.

Congratulations, Dennis! You were right here under our noses the whole time. :guffaw:

Nah, too old. :D

Whoa, that's a cool cast!

Is that a consensus? Among Trekkies? No way?!

And now our next big stop is:

THE PDF OF THE SCREENPLAY!

Oi! :rommie:

I've been really surprised by the 'quality' of the casting so far.

When the film was originally annouced I thought no established actors would want to get involved (through fear of being forever tainted with the Star Trek name), but I'm really glad that we've got stars like Sylar, Pegg, Urban and Bana.

The American accent Karl uses which he learned from his Xena days is so painful. Hopefully, since he is going to be playing Deforest playing McCoy, he might not sound like a Ken Doll.

This surprises me because I've been so fixated on Gary Sinise for years, but I think Karl Urban will be fine. He does have a similarly shaped face, and I think he's interesting in that I don't always see him even when I've been watching him in a film.

So we've got a dark, handsome, sinewy, glowering Bones.

Well, DeForest Kelley was considered quite handsome in his heyday. And he could certainly glower with the best of them. Also, like Urban, he was the cast member who was best-known beforehand, familiar to television audiences from over a decade of Western badman roles.

Umm... that would be quite a twist on the idea of a Southern doctor... :wtf:

And although there haven't been any Kiwi characters in Trek as far as we know, New Zealand has actually been mentioned or alluded to in Trek a surprising number of times:

You know, looking at the picture at AICN of Urban, and thinking about it more ... I am warming up to the idea of Urban as McCoy, just as I warmed up to the notion of Pine playing Kirk.

I can see the facial resemblance between Urban and Kelley, and I can even imagine Urban giving McCoy that snarky personality that he's so famous for. It could very well work out quite nicely.

The best reaction to this news that I've come across comes from "Disciple_72" at CHUD.com:

"Yet another case of DeForestation for the sake of Urbanisation."

Great actor, hot guy. Wierdly enough I would never have imagined him as McCoy but looking at him now I can see it. He has always played very different characters to this and the look he has in most pictures reflects that, but with the right makeup, costumes, demeanor etc I actually think he could look quite a bit like a young McCoy.

If startrek.com is reporting it, then it must be old news already - because they're a day late and a dollar short every time out.

Well old or not, if its not on ST.COM its not "official". And if its on AICN and nowhere else, then its highly suspect.

I've only seen Urban in The Bourne Supremacy (believe it or not, I still haven't seen the LOTR trilogy). Good for Karl! It will be interesting seeing him try to pull off a southern accent!
