An Open Challenge

Mr Silver

I am pretty substandard at 3D modelling and I'm trying to visualise a certain kind of starship so I thought I'd pose a challenge to the talented designers in this forum.

The ship I have in mind is one that is bigger than everything else we've seen so far. A ship that is designed for long range exploration missions and diplomatic functions. It would be crewed by around 5000 and have enough space to house around 10000 for an extended period of time. This would be due to planetary relocations, diplomatic functions and a larger military presence during times of conflict.

I've tried to imagine this ship as having a similar external design to the Sovereign class and being similar in design to the majority of Starfleet vessels with the primary and secondary hull configuration. I've also imagined the saucer section as being particulary large vertically as this is where the majority of the crew and guests would be located.

So, anyone willing to give this challenge a shot?

Which era of TREK? What are its capabilities? Are there any specifics as far as design criteria? What kind of project is this for, a fan-fic or fan-film?

When I think of something on this scale, I think of the Enterprise-J. Something that large would essentially be a floating "city in flight", like a colony in space. If you look at it that way, you will begin to wonder if it would serve as a starship or as a transwarp-driven galaxyship.

24th century Trek, within the 2382 timeline in the novelverse. Therefore the ship would have capabilities consistant with this timeframe, like a quantum slipstream drive perhaps.

As for it being for a project, it's not really for anything in particular. I'm just wondering what people could come up with given the traits I've supplied.

I can see where you're coming from, but this would be a ship that exists a long time before the Federation develops such technology as the Enterprise-J.

Actually, this design I posted yesterday might fit the bill. You really can't tell from the sketch, but I had conceived it as being VERY large, essentially a mobile starbase with huge, open docking bays along its flanks big enough to park 4 or 5 Sovereign class starships side-by-side. At the scale shown below, I'd estimate the overall length at somewhere around 9 km.

Smooth and featureless as you might expect at that scale. Do the nacelle structures lean on ball joints as it seems--or free floating?

I don't know, I mostly just roughed out the shapes. I figure everything is physically attached somehow, but then again, it might be interesting if they weren't.

That will dwarf the Megabungadude Class from the old Galactic Engineer's Concordance fanzine :) :rommie:

Vektor, that ship looks to me like it might fit the Covenant from Halo more than it does Star Trek. Just my opinion. It's pretty freakin' cool either way.

It does share some lines with a Covie battlecruiser doesn't it?

i have some sketches of a ship that I conceived of along similar lines. It's for the late 2300's and is about 1.5km long. Not a super long ship compared to some. My main feature for this very long range exploration ship was that it has 4 defiant type ships embedded into the structure, much like a captain's gig.

I've got to go... My dog wants something. Arg

As I mentioned on Scifi-Meshes, I recently picked up a copy of "Halo: The Art of Creating Worlds," with tons of concept art and illustrations from the games. I love the Covenant designs and it's entirely possible some influence seeped in there.

Don't feel guilty about the ecstasy of influence and never feel the need to apologize for it.

One good turn deserves another and you're full of good turns.

Keep on truckin'
