An interesting "What if?"

STIntergalactic

Captain
Captain
What if Picard had died at the end of Generations? Let's also suppose that for whatever reason, Kirk is given command of the current Enterprise. That may be a stretch, but the idea is basically what would happen with Kirk commanding the TNG crew.

I think they'd probably think him a little fool headed, but would come to respect his style.

Your thoughts?

I think it would never happen for the same reason shown in "Relics." Scotty had 75 years to catch up on, and so would Kirk. Neither one of them is fit for a senior officer position in Starfleet right away. After some study, it might be possible, but that would take years. Kirk would still have something to contribute, but it would be better suited to the classroom.

I don't think my brain is that flexible. Dead Starfleet captain replaced with a previously presumed dead captain that would need to be completely retrained in all the advances made in Starfleet procedures for nearly 80 years? Something tells me he would be even more out of place than Scotty was.

They'd have the same reaction that they had to Jellico. He's too different than Picard. An interesting sidenote is how Janeway described that Kirk and his type would be drummed out of Starfleet in her time.

I think that could have worked out well, but not for very long. You'd have all these episodes where Kirk shows the rest of the crew that you can't really on the technology to solve the really big problems, but rather on your own instincts/visions. That would make for a few cool episodes but it would get old pretty fast.

But Kirk's a Starfleet hero and Riker's idol...

There's a fanfic on this very subject floating around the internet. It was posted to a newsgroup, I believe, years ago. I think Deanna and Jim ended up doing the horizontal shuffle (unsurprisingly enough).

Wouldn't happen. The next movie would be about Kirk happening to stop off during his successful lecture tour and autobiography signing (ghostwrit by the R'Eeves-S'Tevens), saying hi to Captain Riker, and then pow - crisis! Then things would unfold like at the start of Generations, with Riker being Harriman, but when it's clear how unfit Kirk is for this radically new ship, Riker would soon be more like Decker, which suits his relationship to Troi/Ilia just fine.

There you go. :)

Well, they brought Spock back to life, which is a hell of a lot less likely. I'm sure Moore and Braga could have come up with some way to make it happen. All it would take is Picard dying so that he could stop Soran and Kirk taking over the D and destroying the Bird of Prey with his strategic know-how. At the end, some admiral could pop out of a corner and congratulate him and say that he's the best starship captain of the 23rd or 24th century and that he belongs on the bridge of the enterprise. Seems about as believable as Spock putting his "soul" in McCoy's brain.

Plus there's a Trek Comic where Q and Trelane put Kirk on the Enterprise-E and Picard on the Kirk's Enterprise.

Oh and by the way does anybody know the name or have a link
the fanfic mentioned above?
