An Experiment

A good bad influence

Since I have no experience in 3D modelling whatsoever, I was searching for another way to live out the desire to create my own starships. I have some skills in Photoshop, so I had the idea to combine the look of the original Enterprise with the proportions of the Enterprise-D.

What I basically did, was reassembling/mapping parts of this TOS-R image of the NCC-1701 on the image of the D.

Here's the result ...

Figuring out how to do the deflector dish was the hardest part, I guess. Looking at it now, I must say I'm not entirely satisfied with the saucer.

What do you guys think?

Yeah, it does look awkward, that's true. Just goes to show how much they really changed the design for the spin-off.

I will probably try it the other way around, too. With the skin of the D mapped unto the NCC-1701.

It does look awkward but the Enterprise D naccelles on the TOs versio look like the Enterprise J nacelles!
The second one was the better of the two.

WOW. Great job, I'm amazed nobody has done this before. If you have no 3d modeling experience, then no better time than now to dive right in!

I may be the only person who prefers the first one... I like some elements of the second - particularly the upper saucer and the secondary hull, but mostly I like the proportions of the top one.

I think the only two things that throw me are the nacelle front ends, and the lower saucer dome. They are the only parts that seem slightly off to me.

Otherwise, brilliant job. ;) :)

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present ... the Galatution! Or is it the Constitaxy?

I like how this turned out. This time I combined an image of the Enterprise-D (created by Gabe Koerner, if I'm not mistaken) with a rendering of the classic Enterprise, which was very kindly done for me by Starscape. (Thanks again, Andrew!) It took forever to do this (the Photoshop file has several hundred layers), but I'm happy with the result.

Here are the images I used ...

Dude.

If I didn't know better, I would think those were 3D meshes built that way. Nice.

Interesting idea, there.

I think your technique has promise. It definitely looks unique. :)
That second version actually has some pretty neat proportions to it!
Holy crap, that looks amazing. I love the first one.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. It's really appreciated. :)

Yeah, maybe I'll give it a shot in the near future. Problem is, I don't even know which program I should use ... :shifty:

You and me both, actually. :)

I knew you'd say that. I mean, you're the resident Enterprise-D fanboy! :p

Yeah, agreed. The thing is, I wanted to stay as close as possible to the Enterprise-D design. So I had to squeeze the nacelle caps to make them fit. It does look wrong, that's true. As for the saucer dome ... well ... I don't have an excuse for that ... :shifty:

That. Is. Awesome!!!

Eh, guilty as charged. ;)

Well, what I would suggest as an alternate is taking the unsqueezed caps and putting two side by side in the nacelles, sort of like how the D had two points of light in each nacelle. Then work your magic to create the actual shape of the bussard via sampling. (If you want to... :shifty:)

At first, I thought it sounded like an odd thing to do, but you've really pulled it off... They look great!! :techman:
