An Error of Comedies

I have only one caveat about the new film so far, but I just can’t seem to get over it and I hope that some of you can help allay my apprehension. I know that humor has played a role in Star Trek since the beginning, but my fear for the film is that it will have too much over-the-top silliness that will take me right out of the story. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a humorless prude and I’ve always enjoyed the subtle, character based humor as in the Saavik and Spock exchange from ST II; “You lied.” “I exaggerated.” or “That green-blooded son of a bitch, it’s his revenge…” line for ST III. But beyond the McCoy gruff line or the raised eyebrow from Spock, the silly and slapstick stuff always seemed to do in the story for me. I’m the guy that tends to fast forward through parts of IV to get to the good stuff and some of the broad humor in V is so unwatchable that it ruins the entire film for me. And of course, I know I should wait to see the film before condemning anything but I can’t help feeling this way. And, yes, I’m basing this only on the reviewed coverage of the four segments that were shown to the press. But I mean can you imagine watching the scene in ST II where the Reliant is undergoing its first attack against the Enterprise and during the whole attack Kirk’s hands were swelling to Mickey Mouse size or Spock’s nose was growing to Pinocchio’s proportions? Sounds like something out of the Airplane movies. Anyway, I’m truly hoping for the best for this film, I just want to laugh with the characters and not at them.

Well here are some thoughts from Orci on the subject.
Sounds good and should ease your mind a bit

Roberto Orci: I don’t think it will be perceived as parody, I am not worried about that at all. I think there is a difference between the word ‘real’ and ’serious.’ I think it can feel real in a way it has never felt before, and have the humor still be consistent with that. Humor was always a part of Star Trek, and so we had to make sure it was represented somehow. But I don’t think real and serious are the same thing.

TrekMovie: Is the humor part of an appeal to a larger audience and possibly a younger audience?

Roberto Orci: I don’t think so. The humor in it is trying to be character-specific. We are not trying to do what we accused of doing on Transformers, by some of the hardcore fans. And the humor does not go to those places. I think the humor is much more based on who the characters are.

TrekMovie: Kirk never pees on anyone?

Roberto Orci: That is correct. [laughs]

I hope Orci is right and the jokes in Trek XI will be more well-considered, because juvenile, uninspired humor played a big part in ruining Transformers for me.

Not that Transformers in any incarnation has or will be highbrow...
