Hi everyone,

I understand that this username (josborn) posted a message on this board a few days ago that was locked. This was in fact posted by my son who had logged in without my knowledge. I can't find the original thread but if any offence was caused I'd like to apologise unreservedly to anyone who was offended.

Here's to a good message board and looking forward to the new Trek movie!

Sincerely

John

I trust you beat him to within an inch of his life - then speared him with pain sticks.

I don't think that's funny. I sincerely hope that John didn't beat his son for this (or anything, really).

I've found the post in question. But the thread was just closed. There aren't any infractions or notes on your name so apparently, people didn't take it too seriously. So, don't sweat it.

I would, however, teach your child to write in proper English.

That post of his was nearly indecipherable.

On the opposite side, I don't think anyone is suggesting that he beat the kid to the point where his life is in danger.

As a kid, I knew if I did anything like that I would get spanked until I had to sleep on my tummy. It kept me honest for the most part. People seem afraid to spank their kids these days for various reasons and thus we have a large percentage of children running wild these days.

That's discussion for another forum but I strongly disagree. Hurting a child so much it can't lie on his back anymore doesn't sound like a healthy way to raise a child. Psychological studied also point in that direction. But as I said, that's a discussion that belongs in Miscellaneous or TNZ, not here.

I know the poster meant it as a joke but I don't think it's funny to make jokes about it. A lot of people suffer from physical abuse they experienced as children. To me, it's not a light matter. However, I didn't mean to bring anyone down. :)

I just read the post that the user's referring to. If that was indeed your son, depending on the age, that's actually a pretty clever and funny post.

I can see why that would still have been annoying for you, but still, your son is pretty creative(these comments apply if we're dealing with a younger kid. If he's like 16, then disregard this.)

That is a problem which seems to be increasing with each passing day. :scream:
I don't write proper English. I write proper American.

Of course, I don't do that very well either.

American English is still English. The accent might vary but it is still English.

FYI the early Americans settlers' accent in the 17th and 18th centuries was closer to the English accents than to modern American accents. Just listen to a Boston Brahmin accent.

Some spelling rules differ, though, so that's why it's legitimate to claim that one is writing in American (English).

I don't care about race, religion or culture but i do give a d**n about the English language. The English language was one of the tools that ensured Britain became the world's first industrialized nation. The English language contributed immensely to America's development as a nation, both economically and intellectually. Always keep that in mind. The English language has been a great tool for development for centuries now. I respect other languages but i love the English Language. I am sorry if i sound worked up about this matter but i do have strong feelings about this matter.

I'm not quite sure what this has to do with what I wrote. There are obvious differences between American and British English and when someone says he/she writes American it's clear what they mean, namely that they follow the rules of American English. It's neither negative nor positive but just a statement of fact. There are also differences between Canadian French, Belgian French, Swiss French and French French and between Austrian German, Swiss German and German German.

I am not talking about German or French. i am talking about the English language. English is English. Pure and simple. There is no such thing as the "American" language. Americans speak English. American can read books written by J. K. Rowling in her original writing. Americans can read the UK's Daily Mirror and the Sunday telegraph without difficulty. Americans can watch classic British shows like Allo Allo and Mind Your Language and still laugh at the jokes. Americans can understand the English spoken on BBC.

Most Americans speak English and not American.

Those folks who can genuinely claim that they speak American are those native Americans who speak native American languages. If any languages truly deserve to be called American, it is the native American languages. Those were the first true American languages, that developed in America.

1) J. Allen was making a joke.

2) There is such a thing as dialect and the previously mentioned spelling differences, as well as idiomatic phrases that might confuse people from the other country.

3) There was no America when the native languages developed. Calling them "American" without a qualifier would be a misnomer.

I always roll my eyes when people say they speak American. Get over yourselves, the language is called "English" and it has regional and national variations.

True there was no land called "America" while native American languages were developing. But those languages are native to North America. If any Language deserve to be called American, it is those native Americans Languages.

The English Language developed initially in the UK. Now days America has taken over the development of the English Language and now has more Americans speaking English than British who speak English. This is just like South America has a larger population of Spanish speakers than the population of Spanish speakers from Spain. But you don't see the South Americans calling the regional Spanish spoken, Peruvian, Bolivian or Chilean. They call it Spanish still.

My friend Jamie is a Sioux, her native language is Lakota (which she admits she doesn't speak very well), all Native American languages have a actual name that they is referred to by.

No Native American language is called "American."

In much of South America, it's called Castellano, not Espanol.

Brazilian Portuguese is so different than Portugal Portuguese, that movies made in Brazil when shown in Portugal, have to be run with subtitles. So there is such a thing as speaking "Brazilian."

:)

The guy was cracking a joke. Come on guys, get off the soap box on giving him a hard time.

All languages have their dialects and accents. Someone from South Carolina vs someone from Boston are going to speak two very different versions of the language. As for as Britain against America? So I spell honor without a u and I say zee instead of zed. It's how I was raised, it's how we do it over here. If we've corrupted the Queens's English, I'm sorry, but there are no kings or queens over here in America. ;)

Wiki actually has a nice article on the topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_differences
